Sixteen essays make a contribution to "cyborg anthropology" and "cyborg feminism." Volume considers human reproduction through
the lens of an interrogation of the cyborg metaphor, its power, pleasure, promise, and threat. Section one essays discuss
medico-technological interventions in conception and contraception including production of "technosemen." Section two includes
essays by Emily Martin, Rayna Rapp and others, examining gestation and the use of medical imaging (ultrasound) and screening
(amniocentesis) technologies to produce "normal" and "healthy" fetuses. Section three essays consider technobirth, focusing
on the medical monitoring and management of the mother's body. Section four considers childrearing in a digital culture,
including essay by Sherry Turkle on cyborg babies in a culture of "simulation." Exceptional introduction by David-Floyd and
Dumit provides historical/theoretical overview of cyborg metaphor as quintessential postmodern myth and tool.

Have you ever had the feeling that somehere in your home you still had an an unfinished cup of coffee ? It is present as
an absence. I used to get that feeling so often after certain patients had left. They were not psychotic. Still, I could
not shake off that same unfinished coffee somewhere .Perplexing when you have just seen a verbal and pleasant and sometimes
very highly functioning patient.
The Dead Mother is so often behind those veils, and mirrors, and somehow empty cheer.
Thanks to this book, I no longer just FEEL the dead emptiness behind this silent fault in the earth around a patiently waiting human being. Like an experienced geologist "feels" the basic fault in the rock, I now consider
the presence of this absence in a life.I never knew what I was still trying to make up for in a seemingly "healed" and now functioning patient who is always there, like those last drops in that lost cup.
This was one of the most important and one of the most useful books I have read for my work. All clinicians should read this because I do not believe there are many who recognise the possibility of a sometime dead mother who is still alive, or a dead idealised mother who was perhaps dead when she was "alive". Or perhaps they do, but like me, it didn't click in. This is going to be endlessly fascinating for work. How I wish everyone could read it before they complacently close a file.

Research Into The Psychology and Sociology of Deaf Teenagers And Young Adults

Review Date: 2008-05-11
In Martha Sheridan's earlier book, Inner Lives of Deaf Children: Interviews and Analysis, the author and Gallaudet University
professor examined the inner life of young deaf children. In her new book, she returns to interview those same seven children
to see how their lives have changed. Now they are teenagers.
Sheridan examines the similiarities and the differences between deaf and hearing adolescents, how each views themselves and their world at identical life points. Research into disability at different life stages is a fairly new area in the fields of child development, psychology and sociology, as prior generations of researchers, educators and medical professionals didn't contemplate the deaf child as a teenager, or as a young adult. There is no doubt that as the Generation Xers graduate from college and begin their own careers, there will probably be more written on the subject of deafness at every life stage, from birth to the end of life.
240 pages, with tables, reference and an index.

A great gift for teens and their mentors

The kindness and compassion that must fill the heart of author Peter Burwash overflow in this little volume focusing on teenagers.
His concern for the plight of today's teens is obvious, and his offering of solutions and guidelines for them to live by is
an act of generosity that goes above and beyond even what most parents are able to offer their children these days. Burwash
stresses developing good character, having respect for others as well as yourself, and finding real happiness through service
to others, among many other important topics. But he does so in a very easy-going, conversational manner so that it never
becomes dry or preachy. Chapters are short---and the whole book is only 122 pages in 5 by 7 format---so it's easy to take
it in small bites, easy for some to read in one sitting, easy to carry along on a trip. Teenagers will appreciate Burwash's
honesty and his appreciation for what they are up against. His respect for them is also obvious, as he thanks them at the
end for what he has learned from them. As the subtitle, "If You Only Knew" suggests, he seems to be just taking this opportunity
to share his own experiences and realizations with teens so that they can avoid some of the pitfalls he fell into as a youth.
As parents we all try to do that, but sometimes it goes down better when heard from someone else! I have given this book as
a gift to relatives and friends---both teens and parents of teens, boyscout leaders, youth group leaders, etc.---and they
tell me they have found it extremely helpful. A resounding THANK YOU to Peter Burwash for giving us this wonderful gift!

I went to the DeSisto School which was run by A. Michael DeSisto. I would recommend that any parent having trouble with their
teenager read this book. Michael was like a father to me and I miss him dearly (he passed away in November 2003). He had
some strange ways of getting us to listen and be more honest with each other but I can assure you that it showed me that honesty
is the key to any relationship and I believe that I am a better person today because of the things that Michael taught me.
I hope you enjoy reading Michael's insights as much as I have enjoyed living them.

I am an Occupational Therapist with an in-depth knowledge of the subject myself and have no hesitation in recommending this book.I am just devastated that this book is out of print as I've only been able to read a library's copy. This is a book every parent should have on their bookshelves.
