This book offers a thoughtful and thorough analysis of drug abuse among youth, plaguing communities today. Accompanying the problem identification are strategies for community diagnosis, intervention and funding. This step by step guide outlines through figures and exhibits the approaches that may lead to successful social development in communities. Model goals and objectives, timeframes and evaluation tools are especially useful. Materials are timely and real-world, ready for us to put them to use.

Great Resources for Youth Ministry Teams
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-27
It takes a lot for a book or series to make me say the following: If you want to make the most of your resource budget this year, be sure that you add the "HELP" Series from St. Mary's Press to your library. I am always looking for materials that motivate my volunteer teachers to design their own programs and processes. The HELP ( Heads up, Easy, Low cost, Purposeful) series does just that.

Many volunteers are hesitant to design events because they believe that they don't have enough "ideas." Well, with this new collection they have a brand-new pool from which to draw. For our most recent day long junior high retreat, I loosed on the teachers the books from the series that are currently available: "Family," "Community Building," "Holiday and Seasonal," "Justice and Service" and "Prayer" ideas. I requested that they design a retreat using these resources and any of the other books in our youth ministry library.

An hour later, they had the basic layout of the retreat solely using ideas from the HELP series. Volunteers loved digging through the well documented, easy-reading ideas that gave them the freedom to understand, choose and adapt the activities that would best fit our group and enhance the theme of the retreat.

The HELP book series contains a broad range of activities. They are great filler material for current curriculum or better yet, use them as my teachers did to create your own meetings, classes and retreats. There is plenty of commentary and advice on creating prayer and community in each book.

For those of you who are veterans of youth ministry, you may find that some of the materials, especially in the "Community Building" book, are standard types of activities reset especially for young teens. However I think most volunteers will find fresh projects in this book.

Even the most experienced among us will probably find some surprises as they read along. In the "Prayer" book we found the creative and inexpensive "God Can" prayer which was a fine closing service where we could use all those empty aluminum cans we had collected after lunch at the retreat. And for my older teens I will be using the "Post Card Journals" found in the same book.

Brake is the best, the most analytical and most interesting book I have read about subcultures. He takes the approash of symbolic interactionism, theories, and uses it for what it is worth. I would recomend this book to all people interested in you cultures and youthsubcultures

Parenting books can be so boring, but Kate Kelly has organized an informative, fun way to help parents figure out and live in peace with their teenagers! Wish I had this book when my first child was a teen-but I'll get my money's worth because I have a soon to be teenager who makes me feel like a "complete idiot" sometimes! Thanks, Kate, you've made me a new parent!

Great research!

As the title says, the book analyses the development of concepts in children. It starts with explanation of the classical theories of concepts, the reasons of their forming, and what they are lacking.
Starting from that, it goes carefully, without presuming anything, through a set of empirical studies done with young children (pre-school, and early school ages), tightening the ring arround the possible theories.
As a result, at the end the theory of theory based concepts seems to be best fitted.
Closing chapter made me eager to read following books of the author, where he is supposed to analyze what kind of early theories there are in children, if there is just few general , or more specific ones.
Very clearly and well written.

Teenage aggression and growth

Review Date: 2008-03-07
As a professor of social psychology I have found The Connected Father to be invaluable when students suggest, as occurs all too frequently that (a) the abuse they received at the hands of a father made them stronger, or (2) anything that a young person cannot discuss calmly and reasonably should not be discussed at all. Dr. Pickardt's view is precisely the opposite. He renders conflict between teenagers and parents a thing not to be dreaded, not a thing to be either repressed or avoided, but a phenomenon of growth. A thing to be welcomed and embraced. It is the gateway to a young person's independence and maturity. What pleases me most is that his arguments come across not as the pronouncements of an expert, but as the reinforcement of basic awarenesses that lie buried in most of us. They make common sense, and we have to wonder what has blocked us from fuller awareness of them until now. This is an important question, but a separate one and requires another book. In the meantime, the guidelines provided here are as valuable as any lifeline in a sea of angst and uncertainty. I have no doubt that through my classes alone Dr. Pickhardt has impacted hundreds of new parents in a most productive way.

This has helped our family tremendously. It is the most effective and non retraumatizing technique we have found for using with our attachment disordered children.
