The concept of children teaching children is as pure a pedagogy as we'll ever get. In A Class of Their Own, Briggs documents its historical foundations as well as its relevance today as a means of addressing the malaise we so commonly find in our schools. This book introduces us again to the powerful strategy of honoring the innate creativity and worth of every child - not simply as a vessel to be filled, but as a resource we can use to make education more interesting, relevant, democratic, and humane. It works! And as Briggs so eloquently points out, it empowers! It changes both the teacher and the taught, which all great educators know, that's what it's all about.

Solid review of infants and of older children adoption.

Review Date: 1999-03-02
As owner of the Adoptive Parents of Vietnam mailing list, I am always on the lookout for good information for families on adoption. This book is an excellent resource for those who want to dig into post adoption issues. Clinical and Practice Issues in Adoption, by Victor Groza and Karen Rosenberg, presents seven professional papers on the theory and practice of infant-placed and older adoptions. Procedures and experiences of adoption vary dramatically between children placed at infancy and older children -- this book brings these similarities and differences to our attention, so that we can begin to learn from each experience. The authors have succeeded in providing an well-documented presentation for integration of theory, practice, policy, and research between adoptees, birth parents, and adoptive families. While this book is written for professionals and researchers in the adoption; those with a deep interest in the underpinnings of the adoption process from the professional point of view will find it rewarding. Important issues and concepts for all stages of the adoption are addressed, some of which adoptive parents may not yet be consciously aware, although they very well may influence their family. Clinical and Practice Issues in Adoption provides a solid review of the historical and societal context, ethics, and practice of adoption of infants and older children.

Since diagnosed with bipolar disorder, I've read many books concerning this disease. This book was extremely helpful in getting me to understand my condition and it showed me a few preventive techniques that have worked. I am not cured, but Ido believe that this book has helped me in a way that no other book has, and for that I am grateful.

When it comes to researching historical clothing it is easy to find Women's clothing, Men's is a bit harder, and Children's is harder yet, especially boys.
This is revised copy of Children's Costume in England from the fourteenth to the nineteenth Century by Anne Buck and Phillis Cunnington 1965
Excellent book! Photos of original garments. paintings, sculpture and period text as well. Very useful for those late SCAdians. the patterns in this book are from The Workwoman's Guide and Cassells for the 19th century.
This the best general overall view book on children's costume I have seen yet.
Arranged by age/chronology.

The Dionne Experiment
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-24
Most Canadians are very familiar with the tragic story of the Dionne Quintuplets, the 5 darlings of the depression era. I have always been fascinated about all aspects of their lives. But never have I read a book about them which demonstrated just how sad their lives really were. This is not a narrative or biographical review of the Dionnes. Rather, it is a collection of the records of various observations and experments done on the children who, in my opinion, became not only the human interest story of the century, but also laboratory rats. Here, you will find palm and foot prints, photographic studies, and charts detailing eveything from feedings and growth, to play times and trips to the washroom. As you read through the various studies, you will enter the sterile and restricted hospital which was their home in their first years and beyond. You will quickly come to realize why these little girls had such trouble adjusting to family life as well as society in general. This book is for anyone who is able to look past the pretty and fascinating pictures of 5 identical baby girls and see the truth beyond the headlines and government propoganda. It's not an easy read, but the Blatz studies shed much light on attitudes of the day concerning not only child rearing but also the supposed well treatment of our "National Treasures".
