Basically, recommended for child psychiatry, psychology, and SW trainees. This book covers all the nuts and bolts that are should be covered before you see your first pt/client. I'm reading it during child psychiatry fellowship, but I wish I had read it before I even started. Includes what to have in the room, what to do when kids don't want to leave their parents, working with schools, termination....really pertinent stuff.

Louise Bates Ames give a wonderful detail of the traits we can expect from our toddlers through 10 year olds as their personalities develope with their complex minds. as they change into ten year olds. The characteristics she descibes in this book are extremely beneficial insights into the young minds we are in charge of forming. The benefit of this insight is very helpful for the new and seasoned parent as it gives answers to what to expect and many helpful suggestions for what to do to get the responses we are lookng for in our children. Her study of children's traits is extensive and complete with useful examples of actions to be taken and reactions not to use. I highly recommend this book to all parents.

The developing creating child
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-21
Piaget provides a developmental model of human intelligence. He outlines distinct stages beginning with the sensory- motor stage and shows how in each stages the child integrates what has been previously learned in order to expand and develop his powers. Instead of focusing on 'inherent and deterministic drives, or on archetypal eternal patterns, he focuses on capabilities which emerge through interaction between the changing inner world of the child and the world he meets. Piaget puts emphasis on Mankind as a 'creating and constructing creature'.
His writing is complex and often abstract and difficult. But his ideas have been basic to the whole study of child development.

Taking Apart the Myth
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-28
In "Childhood" Jenks stabs at the heart of sociology's obsession with mythology, this time in the form of childhood. By providing a concise, if inaccessible, analysis of why and how sociologists, psychologists, and educators conceive of children, Jenks encourages a critical examination of the assumptions behind many institutions. This book provides necessary support for conversations about youth rights, civic engagement, and the roles of young people throughout society. It is a powerful tool for the determined popular reader, and an introductory lever for the academic. Suggested follow-up reading? Evolving Capacities of the Child by Gerrison Lansdown.

An impressively informed and informative body of analytical commentary

Review Date: 2007-11-04
Ten distinguished academicians and clinicians in this very specialized are of psychology have contributed to "Childhood Mental Health Disorders: Evidence Base And Contextual Factors For Psychosocial, Psychopharmacological, And Combined Interventions", a review of the professional literature focused on evidence-based practice pertaining to psychopharmacology and psychotherapy for a variety of mental health disorders in children. This seminal volume covers currently available information on the effective use of treatment modalities, sequencing, comparative risks and benefits, the integration of psychotropic medications, as well as psychosocial interventions for children and adolescents. Among the conditions or disorders addressed are those that are internalized (anxiety, depression), and those that are externalized (hyperactivity, conduct, oppositional defiance, attention deficits). An impressively informed and informative body of analytical commentary, "Childhood Mental Health Disorders" should be considered an essential acquisition for professional, clinical, and academic library Child Psychology/Child Psychiatric reference collections and supplemental reading lists.
