A must read for counsellors and therapists - not only child & family therapists

The editors of this book present a most holistic view to understanding child and adolescent development - a view that would be impossible to achieve if viewed from one science/perspective alone. They present a scientific study of development in the biological, cognitive, linguistic, social, cultural, moral, personality, emotional, and aesthetic domains as well as exploring an extensive range of contempory research topics including the significance of diversity in development etc. The editors also present up to date neuroscience information which all together combines to make what I experienced as a fascinating and most valuable gaining of knowledge and understanding.

Highly practical review of child psychopharmacology

Of all the texts available on the subject of the psychopharmacology of childhood psychiatric disorders this is the one I like the best. The main reason is the care and detail in which Dr. Kutcher sets forth the (for me) basic axiom of treating children, which is that each child is unique, so each medication trial is, in effect, a research experiment with a N of 1. He provides an excellent range of measurement tools, including making up your own for specific symptoms. There are lots of good clinical examples which ground medication in the context of the child and family. All in all an unusually practical and well-written book. Wm. Bolman, M.D., Clinical Professor of Child Psychiatry

I was looking for a book about art therapy when I came across this book. It has a wealth of information in it about different techniques to use with children. There are also sections in it on helping the handicapped child and helping parents through art. There is a lot of information presented in this book and the information is intertwined with actual case histories so it makes it very interesting to read. Their are also a lot of pictures of the children's actual artwork in this book. It has really sparked my interest in the subject and given my a lot of interesting ideas to use in my work.

Awesome!

This book is absolutely awesome. It chronicles the physical, emotional, mental and social development of children from pre-conception issues like genetics through adulthood.

It is easy to read, yet incredibly clear and detailed. It is clearly a textbook (quite heavy and full of pictures, graphs and diagrams), but it is also quite interesting. The vocabulary in introduced and throughly explained before it is used.

What I found most interesting is that the author helps you make connections between what a child's development is biologically and what that means we (as teachers, parents or child-care workers) should be doing to help them grow while protecing them.

I don't have children yet, but I am incredibly glad that I have read this book first and that I'll have it as a reference as he/she grows. It's a no-nonsense, basic explanation of how we develop and how adults can help/hurt it.

What can you expect a three-year-old to understand about right and wrong? Why is a tricylce a good toy for a preschooler? Those questions and much more are answered within.

This book gives excellent examples and teaches practical ways to deal with agressive and passive children. The book is a guide for helping children communicate to solve disputes instead of the adult solving problems for them. Most adults focus on the aggressive child during conflicts but this book teaches adults to focus on the passive child first. Using this method in my classroom is dramatically changing the way my children interact. We have less fighting and more fun.

Rich, phenomenological descriptions of childhood realities
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-11-04
Eva Simms writes with incredible clarity about the experiential realities of the world of childhood, and has achieved what is, in all practicalities, the only worthwhile book on the phenomenology of childhood ever written, period. The book is a remarkable achievement, and the many years of careful, slow and methodical reflection on the data of children's experiences is plainly evident to any discerning reader. What Eva's work reveals is how childhood experience is especially and uniquely revealing of the essential structures of human experience as they are rooted in our existential condition, as embodied, temporal, social beings. And these insights provide a foundation for any psychology which hopes to take human experience, and children, seriously -- which is to say, on their own terms.
