I had my three children read this book ages 10. 12, and 14. They understood how people can affect another person life in
a positive and also damaging way. They were absorbed in the book reading the letters from people of various ages. I think
the schools should have this on their required reading lists in the media centers. It shows one how you can help another
person in their life if you just give up a little time of your own to help those in need.

Bullying was once considered a character-building rite of passage for children, but now it is seen for what it is--a form
of victimization and abuse which can leave lasting psychological scars. The letters in this book bring the bullying problem
to life as we read the stories of bullies as well as stories of the bullied. Bullying affects everyone and, as evidenced
by some of the stories, the scars can sometimes last a lifetime. I would hope that all students would read this book and
many thanks to the two sisters who began the letter-writing campaign!

We should all read this book. It is a wonderful example of how long bullying affects individuals. The letters are heart wrenching
and touching and show the long-lasting results that bullying can cause.
Every educator, administrator, daycare worker, psychologist, case workers and parents should read this book. It is that powerful.

This book offers support for anyone who is being or has been bullied. I especially liked the inclusion of letters from former
bullies and the insights from many older people who give a long perpective of the effects of bullying. This is a problem which
is not likely to go away, so having more tools and awareness to deal with it is very beneficial.

I found this book very readable and extremely helpful. I have two middle school children in two different middle schools,
and I learned a lot from reading this book. It is based on research, and the authors make excellent recommendations for parents
at the end of each chapter. Although I'd heard about bullying and mean comments occassionally, I had no idea how common this
is for today's middle and high school kids. After reading this book I spent some time talking to my kids, both about being
bullied and why kids act like bullies. Having read this book, I was a lot more comfortable having the conversation, and I
think my kids realized that I understood some of their experiences. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is concerned
about their own child, or who wants to help change the environment within a school. (in fact, I wanted to make more specific
comments, but I've already loaned this book to a friend whose son is being bullied!)I am also planning to give a copy to the
guidance counselor at my daughter's school. After reading this, I realize that just having "BULLY FREE " signs up at school
is not enough; and I have some ideas about what we could do to make things better. This book was a real wake-up call for
me, and I highly recommend it.

I think that Garbarino's latest book accurately tells what students go through in high school and and its effects on some
people. With school-shootings such as Columbine happening, I think that this book is definitely on the must-read list.

"Sticks, stones, and bullets may break their bones, and words can break their hearts," write Drs. Garbarino and deLara in their book on bullying among teenagers. "And Words Can Hurt Forever" not only describes the increasing reality of the problem, but it also gives parents concrete ideas on what they can to protect their children.
From their base at Cornell University, the authors interviewed students, teachers, and administrators from around the country. They found that, everyday, millions of teenagers suffer from emotional violence in the form of bullying, stalking, intimidation, and humiliation.
"Over and over again parents are surprised, even stunned, to discover the extent and nature of the emotional and physical violence that their teenagers face at school," they say. The problem persists because students don't tell adults about it, and administrators are indifferent or unable to do anything.
Garbarino and deLara point out that, if the same thing happened to us in our workplace, we would be quick to take legal action. Don't our children deserve the same level of protection? So, what can we do to create a safer environment for our teens? The "What You Can Do" list at the every chapter outlines concrete ideas such as: recognize that most students want adults to intervene; volunteer to supervise trouble areas of the building; exercise your right to contact your school board president; and if nothing improves for your child, consider legal intervention.
Doctors Garbarino and de Lara conclude their book by saying: "When it comes to bullying, sexual harassment, and emotional violence at school, the buck stops with adults."

this is a good read for anyone who has to deal with verbal abuse. I feel like the title is a little misleading, as I have
found this book very helpful in dealing with my mother and I am 28 yrs old. Although, I wish this book had been around when
I was a teen, it probably would've made growing up with an abusive parent a lot easier. It is very insightful and gives helpful
advice on recognizing patterns and "tricks" and also dealing with the verbal abuse. I also feel like I will be a better parent
myself for reading this book. Much thanks to the author !

Provides a great reference in understanding verbal abuse and what a devestating impact it has on a teen. Many adults can relate
to this too and perhaps see themselves as victims from their past. This book will also help others evaluate their "blind spots"
and recheck verbal messages they are sending. "Everyone" should read this!

There is nothing that a survivor of verbal abuse wants more than to spare their children the devastation of a lifetime exposure
to verbal abuse. Unfortunately, for those who have not felt it, or cannot wrap their mind around the concept and articulate
it, the concept of verbal abuse, and its devastating effects, can seem very abstract. Teen Torment, as I read it, took the
concept of verbal abuse, presenting it and analyzing it in a context that everyone has experienced (as a teen). Teen Torment
presents an analysis of verbal abuse in a context which anyone who has experienced teen life has lived through. Thus making
the concept of verbal abuse less abstract, and far easier to grasp and understand. The beauty of this approach is that once
a person learns to identify verbal abuse in the context of teen life, they are much better prepared to recognize it in the
context of intimate relationships. An added bonus is that a victim in a verbally abusive relationship can read this book
without drawing the critical attention of the abuser, as the title (Teen Torment) does not immediately reveal a topic which
the abuser, at first glance, might find threatening. In short, this is a great book on verbal abuse that has application
to all people who seek to gain a greater understanding of verbal abuse, and particularly for parents who desire to spare their
children from the torment of verbal abuse.

Sari's book is way cool! I'm turning fifteen next month and I found her book soooo helpful. She answers those questions
we ALL wonder about, but my parents seem so OUT OF IT when it comes to school and friends and stuff. I started reading Sari's
book, and I'm like "Sari must be reading my mind." She really knows what it's like to be a teenager. It's hard to be myself
and get along with my friends too...muchless make my parents happy. Sari has the BEST advice though. Her advice helped me
get a date with this guy I've had a total crush on for months...and I'm not really the social type because I study a lot and
I'm kind of shy. I'm so psyched! I'm getting a copy for each of my girlfriends and I'll tell them to put it right on top
of their Bible! I even caught my mom reading this book the other day. I've salways wished I had an older sister, and now
I really know why. Thanks, Sari!

I got a copy for my 16 year old daughter, and she loved the book instantly. It has real letters from real teens, including
some in their own handwriting, which my daugther thinks is "cool." The book is in an easy to read format of Q and A, and the
book is long, which I liked, because there is a lot of information (and for a low price considering the length). Sari's advice
is very good, which is why I got it for my daughter in the first place. My daughter has already said to me that she learned
things from the book. Some of the things were cute, like how to walk in high heels. Other things were more meaningful, like
what to do if her friends wants to cheat off of her homework, or how to ask someone out on a date, and she even said that
she learned things about how to communication better with me. I am very glad that I bought this book, and I recommend it highly
for any teen or parent.

As the title states, this is "A Practitioner's Handbook" and an extremely useful one for the practicing School Psychologist
or anyone involved with or interested in furthering their knowledge of School and Clinical Neuropsychology.
Likely one of the best School Neuropsychology resources to surface, I particularly found the Case Studies as well as the practical approach to disorders typically found in the schools (written language, reading, ADHD) useful in my own practice. The chapter entitled Linking Assessment to Intervention is tantamount to today's changing dynamic in the field and gives School Psychologists interested in Neuropsychology a solid conceptualization of appropriate service delivery in which the psychologist can intervene to assess as opposed to simply running everyday psychoeducational reports with figures nobody understands. The authors guide the practitioner to use effective pre-referral intervention programs to offset the tremendous amount of referrals seen in the schools today.
This is a well-researched and thorough handbook that has accomplished all the important groundwork to help guide School Neuropsychology into the future. I highly recommended it as a useful reference for any researchers and clinicians working with children and adolescents.

I took a college class for educators from Roger Puza and I have to say that it was the best class I have ever taken. Roger
was just finishing up his book at that time, so I haven't read it yet. I'm glad to see that it is now available on Amazon.
If his book is as great as his class was, any Health educator would do well in acquiring this book and utilizing it in their
class.
