I purchased an earlier version of this book when my first child was an infant. I continued to use the book until they were
teenagers. It was the most used of my parenting books. I purchase this book for shower gifts for soon-to-be moms. They will
find it useful, when their child is ill, in making decisions about when to call the doctor and when not to worry.

I still have the copy of the book my mother-in-law gave me 30 years ago, and the worn cover reminds me of how often I referred
to it while my now-adult children were growing up. I'm ordering 3 copies of the updated version today; it's the perfect gift
for all the brand new parents I know. Want to know when to alienate the doctor by calling at midnight and when to wait until
Monday morning? This book is The One..... Want to walk into the pediatrician's office with a clear, concise idea of what
symptoms to convey? It's The One. Want to avoid a trip to the doctor's office or urgent care center altogether? This book
can help you do that with confidence and a clear conscience. It's definitely an excellent buy for any and all parents.

This is a great guide. I received my copy in 1977 when my daughter was born. I used it for years! Loved the flow charts.
Definately eases the panic of parents. Explains so much! I have bought several copies of this book-first for friends in
the 70's having their children, and now the updated book for the next generation of new parents....our children having children.

This book is like having a doctor in the house. My pediatrician took me more seriously when I called because I only called
or visited when it was truly necessary. This book is so helpful in the way it works you through the problem and informs you
of what to expect when you do have to visit the doctor. I highly recommend this book to new parents; it will give you more
credibility when you visit the doctor and you are not seen as an anxious new parent.

Empowerment to self-care

Review Date: 2007-02-16
A book easy to read and easy to understand covering many situations persons could be confronted with vis-à-vis their own,
or their child's health state. The idea is to empower self-responsibility. Very clearly it is elaborated that unexcited consideration
may lead to clear decisions either to help oneself or seek help at different levels. It gives advice how one could cope with
the discomfort of a deteriorated health state, but it also gives hints "what to expect at the doctor's office". Used thoughtfully
this book altogether may help to save resources not only on the level of personal psychological strain, on the level of financial
assets, but on the level of the health care system too where providers thus can concentrate on essential and main issues
that cannot be solved by self-care alone. May this book experience further editions, find its way in many hands and heads,
and help many needy - at least to a certain extend - to take care of themselves.

An excellent book to use for medical self-care. In flow-chart style, it guides you through questions/answers and a possible
diagnosis, then advises whether your condition is mild, moderate, or serious enough to warrant emergency medical care. I also
like "Take Care of Your Child," and used it a lot when my children were small.

to call a doctor's office if you're not sure you need a doctor, and this book helps you figure out if you need to go in or
not. Highly reccomended

As a personal user of this book and as someone that sells this book in bulk to employers and health plans looking to distribute
it to their employees and members, I have extensive experience with seeing its effectiveness in positively aiding the decision
to care for various medical conditions at home versus utilizing a doctor or medical facility. The book is a simple to use
tool and generates a positive financial impact in terms of cost savings to companies desiring a reduction in their health
care spending. If you are interested in reaching me to discuss volume purchases [...]

This book is a classic in its field. If you have ever known anyone with Alzheimer's Disease (AD) or have worried if you will
, at some future or near date, get it yourself or are mildly interested in what it is all about - this is a must book. Geared
to the lay population (and professionals can learn a lot from it too) it is a fast, easy read chock full of information offered
up on an appetizing way for a subject that we all want to distance ourselves from - but cannot and should not. Offering direct,
hands-on hints to family members, it is a concrete guide that no other book I know of has provided. As two professionals
who have specialized in the field of aging, few in psychology do, teach it and write about it, we suggest it to all our students
and family members who come to us in despair and leave with hope. Dr. Lenore Powell has given us all a gift. We owe her much
thanks. Marcella Bakur Weiner, Ph.D. and William Weiner, Ph.D.

I liked this book because it addresses the emotional devastation of Alzheimers as well as the physical, legal, and domestic
arrangements. There is an entire chapter devoted to anger, another to depression, and another to fear. I found this to
be right on target.

I highly recommend this book for everyone who has, or cares about someone who has diabetes. If you ever heard, "test this,
restrict that, and by the way, you'll probably end up going blind anyway" and then thought "Why should I?" this is a great
eye-opener. This book offers real-life feelings and experiences of other DM-ers (both types) in support of the idea that major
adjustments are being/have been required in your life, and there are emotional side-effects of those changes that most of
our doctors are not trained to deal with. It has some good tips, but more importantly, helps you ask the question: exactly
how is this going to effect my self-image? Great section about thinking of yourself as "good or bad" based on choices that
most make without a second thought. (i.e. should I go for a run?) There are also good chapters on how parents feel when a
child is diagnosed, teenagers and their control issues, and sex. I especially recommend this book for anyone with diabetes
experiencing depression, whether recently diagnosed or going on the 40th anniversary. One drawback - the book is a bit old,
so references to the med stuff is dated

Creating the team to create the reality...

For me, this book is not about the battle against illness but rather the power of creating a TEAM to create the REALITY we
want in life. There are two ways to get love in this world -- ask for it and give it. This book helped me to really be
clear on my purpose, put out to the world what I really want, enlist the assistance of others in meeting that goal, and
continue improving my life and others I come in contact with through my efforts. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Dare
to live as someone who was "dying" teaches you! I have been on my own personal journey of transformation predicated by
major conflict with a teenage son. We are both deeply involved with creating a better world for ourselves and others.
What a ride!
A must read for Cancer warriors and survivors.

When you sit across a big wooden desk from someone in a white labcoat who says "I'm afraid it's bad news" and advises you
to get your affairs in order, your next move should be to pick up this book. Mr. Stone's uplifting method of taking on The
Big "C" is an inspiration for those of us who share the journey. If you haven't started your own "buffaloe herd" yet, you
will! Thank you, thank you, thank you to Bob and Jenny for this manual on survivorship. This book is worth an "out-of-print"
search.

I have been struggling with my health for over four years. It started with a bed, bad allergy flare up. The drugs used I was
not told would mess me up and the doctors had no clue what the allergen was, even though I gave them all the facts. I have
spent the last year surviving on student loans, grant, what little work I could keep because I would hurt myself and lose
the job or be too tired to do the long hours my jobs require. I kept searching for answers on the internet and this book appeared
in an article one day. I bought it. Best thing I ever did. No doctor I have seen in the last two years ever brought up anything
in this book. I have since taken the saliva test advised in this book and my cortisol levels are really low, hence my hormones
are also very, very low. It is a very easy to read book and I recommend it to anyone who is always tired, especially in the
morning but wakes up in the evening. This book will bring so much to light and also help you see there are other problems
that may need to be addressed beside your adrenal glands being messed up. The biggest problem you will have if you figure
out this might be what you have is a doctor that will agree with you. I have just found one. She is a N.D. and I drive 40
miles one way to see her. It is worth every penny of gas to get there because she has found other things wrong that all tie
together for the cause of my symptoms.
I highly recommend this book.
