Acute-Care Books

I'm not a surgeon, not even close, but this is a great text. Nice balance of concise and comprehensive. Great topics, tons of practical information. Looking forward to watching this text develop over the next few editions. It will surely be a standard for this relatively new surgical specialty.

I found this book to be an invaluable assest and reference text. As a resident needing a thorough reference at home for this text will be a welcome addition to my library (and the first place I head to late at night). It systematically breaks down each chapter into clear, clinically important areas so you can easily find what you need.

A well researched text that is a skillful blend of theory and practice. I was readily able to translate the information into staff daily practice.

Two experienced teachers explain the principles of acute care simply yet comprehensively. This book is practical and case-based. Throughout, `mini-tutorials' expand on the latest thinking or controversies.

Chapters include: patients at risk (recognising critical illness and the use of early warning scores), oxygen, acid-base balance, respiratory failure, fluid balance and volume resuscitation, circulatory failure and the use of inotropes, sepsis, acute renal failure, brain failure and optimising physiology before surgery.

This book is essential reading for anyone who looks after acutely ill adults.

This is a conference proceedings book and is very detailed on many aspects of brain hypothermia in the injured brain. It serves the purpose of a reference and research book maintaining an encyclopedic character throughout. It even has new chapters on brain slices, new ICU technologies, aspects of subarachnoid hemorrhage and hypothermia, etc. It has new indications 2005 for cardiac arrest, ischemic stroke, and the traumatically injured brain. This is the new hot volume on hypothermia, excuse the contradiction in terms.

This is a very easy book to understand. It gives a great idea of what to expect when you become a Nursing Assistant and explains the duties well. The procedures are explained in detail and always show a picture or a drawing. It is high quality and fast to read.

Excellent for the house super or ED rotation. Small enough for your coat pocket. Problem based, algorithmic approach with adequate text and drug dosages. Definately a great tool for your night as the house super. My first copy was "borrowed" from the ED, i liked it so much i bought another one. One of my "securtiy blanket" books. I always have it with me.

Very well done group of authors -- particularly interesting chapters on neurobiology and the stress on families of disaster workers. Good summary chapter at the end.
