Integrative Acupressure is an excellent educational guide for individuals interested in either working on themselves, studying Integrative Acupressure as a tool to use working with others, or as an adjunct to an already existing practice. I am an Integrative Acupressurist, having studied with my brother, then worked at his New England Institute for Integrative Acupressure. He continues to develop new and remarkable ways of addressing organs, systems, and fostering the balance of health. I provide consultations to Practitioners ( and their clients )who have acquired significant skills simply by studying his accessible book. I use this book to teach individuals these skills and create a stable, productive practice of their own. And I enjoy returning to the pages with repetition to remind myself, find new valuable information I missed before, and relish the way it speaks so responsively and comprehensively to so many readers I have spoken to, whether they be accustomed to this work, or newly acquainted. Integrative Acupressure enables so many of us to offer to a broad range of clients an ability to support significant change in great illness, health, acute emergency, pregnancy, to infants and older people, four footeds and two, and to evaluate and address the health of complex structure, all organs and systems. This book offers a guide to slowly add all of these skills to the work you already do with yourself and others.

I really loved this book. It clearly explains the western and eastern views on body energy meridians. The diagrams that are used are some of the best I have seen. I have been able to find exact pressure points with the author's precise instructions very easily. I have used the pressure points to relieve headaches and pain associated with kidney infections. I know that this book will benefit anyone who takes the time to read and apply it.

I was fortunate to find out about this book back in 1999 through a casual converstion with a Licensed massage therapist just before I had finished my own training for LMT.

This book really helped me grasp the concepts necessary for me to pass the National Exam. And to be perfectly honest, if I had not studied out of this book, I would have had a lot more difficulty passing the National Exam.
I can only hope they will reprint this book because my copy is a bit over-used and over-loved. To this very day I keep going back and referring to my copy.

Reading "It Is in Your Hands" was a very positive life problem -solving experience. After trying psychological therapy (which did not work) for a traumatic life experience I decided to try the EFT and TIT therapies presented in a very simple language in this book and they worked!

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Thought Field Therapy (TFT) (similar to acupuncture but without the needles) can dissolve any negative energies and emotions originated by negative life experiences by simply tapping with the hands specific points of the body's energy meridian system and by simultaneously concentrating and feeling with intensity the particular emotions one wants to eliminate. I believe this book can help anyone to be free from traumas and destructive emotions and to reach peace and tranquility as it did for me. I truly recommended this gem of a book.

An Excellent book! Concise, easy-to-follow illustrations and practical exercises. It was a revelation to discover that I no longer need an expensive therapist to get rid of most of my negative emotions. I have
gone through several kinds of professional "talk therapy" for years and the most I have accomplished is a way to "manage" my stress. However, after applying the Emotional Freedom Technique discussed in the book for a few minutes, I was able to completely dissolve a chronic fear I had since childhood. This was a permanent cure since the fear has not returned since then. I have also applied EFT to completely eliminate job-related stress. I am becoming a more calm and relaxed individual and I am applying EFT daily to deal with any distressful event. For the first time I feel I can indeed eliminate my psychological patterns. I am applying EFT daily and I am becoming a happier, peaceful, individual. This book should be required reading for anyone interested in happiness.

This book expains how emotions -in the Western sense - reflect energetic balance/imbalance -in terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Five Element Theory and meridians. Innovative graphics illustrate the complex dynamics. Numerous clinical examples are provided, couched in the beautiful and mystical poetry of Chinese Medicine and Philosophy, against a background of clinical western psychology. An absolutely essential volume for anyone, not weaned on these metaphors, but interested in holistic treatment, at any level. Beatifully written, deserves to be read and re-read.

Human understanding of the connection between emotion and physical health remains elusive in Western Medicine. This provocative Eastern view gives us hope that reintegration of our selves after traumatic moments and the transformation of "negative" feelings is literally at our finger tips.
This book is one of the deepest explorations into the energy of healing and remains a much worn friend in my healing library.
A must have book for healing touch practitioners from all traditions. A must read for all of us who hope to heal ourselves.

I found this book several years ago at the public library. It delivers just what it promises, a useful method for improving circulation, health and thereby skin tone and color. Using this method provides a viable alternative to surgery. It's longer lasting, relaxing, non-invasive and cost-effective. A valuable book for anyone committed to self-responsible self-maintenance.

Because it's out of print, I've borrowed this book again several times since. I've also looked for something simliar to purchase, but nothing comes close. Alas!

I discovered "New Beauty: The Acupressure Facelift" about five months ago and have practiced Lindsay's acupressure methods nearly every day since. I have noticed great results! I love this book and wish it would be re-printed. She provides a wonderful alternative to surgical facelifts--something plastic surgeons certainly wouldn't like! Still, I think all women should be able to learn about the benefits of facial massaging and exercises and decide for themselves if this method is right for them. It IS right for me.

Despite the mantra of the 1950's when Father Knew Best, we all know Mama's the one holding the apron strings. The wisdom of mothers' hands has been passed down from one generation to the next, through food, spices, herbs and home-made medicines better than any pharmaceutical solution. If you've ever tasted my mother-in-law's homemade chicken soup when you've had the ickiest cold since time memorial, you'll know -Mama really does know best.

Mama's Home Remedies: Discover Time-Tested Secrets of Good Health and the Pleasures of Natural Living is a tribute to the old wives' wisdom that transcends modernity. It will inspire you to reach for your vegetable pantry before you head for the pharmacy. Among other things, the instrinsic magic of beets, potatoes, and wine grape leaves are revealed in these pages. Written by Svetlana Konnikova who grew up in the vineyards of Moldova, this book tells us to return to our roots - literally.

Part natural living guide, part naturopathic treatise, Mama's Home Remedies offers all kinds of advice women used to glean at the kitchen table as they nourished their families' hearts, bodies and souls. Cabbage leaves applied to the forehead can alleviate headaches. Inhaling the steam from potato water drains your sinuses. My all-time favorite for the winter blues: pomegranate juice.

As we speed along in our rapid-fire lifestyles, we're lucky to have Ms. Konnikova's immense knowledge wrapped in Mama's Home Remedies' 314 pages. The next time I'm faced with a health challenge, I will seek a gentler solution straight from Mother Nature, the world's first and only true healer.

"It is snowing outside right now and I am writing a book review for a wonderful volume that I can highly recommend.. It is called Mama's Home Remedies, and is written by Svetlana Konnikova, formerly a journalist in the Soviet Union.

It is a How-to-Autobiography that recounts not only a wide variety of natural remedies, but how they were learned at the feet of her mother and grandmother, with a wonderful potpourri of folk and fairy tales, and modern and ancient natural science interspersed between.

Most books like this, when something is wrong, you go into them, find the subject in the index, and then look up the suggestions for helping alleviate it. This book does that too, but in addition, when life is stressful and you are looking for relief, you can open this book and escape into the fairy tales, folk stories and life's adventures of Svetlana and her family, along with fascinating explorations of such things as ancient Druid beliefs about trees or the instincts animals have for healing themselves that we can learn to emulate in our lives as well.

Mama's Home Remedies is so well organized, with everything arranged in bullitted boxes, numbered lists, (also boxed,) and boxed sidebars containing the stories, that everything is ridiculously easy to find. Usually you have to dig through a book to find a fact remembered but not bookmarked. Not so here. All you need to do is remember the topic, or chapter. Once there, a quick thumbing through the pages will take you directly to the right box, and there you are. It is a model for the way I am going to lay out my upcoming books.

In the few short weeks I have had the book, it has earned a place on the bookshelf right next to my computer, so that when I need a break, it is right at hand. It is a marvelous vehicle for stress relief. She has a whole chapter on stress, but nowhere does she mention picking up her book and reading a few pages as one of the ways. She should. "

This book poses what appear to be all the proper questions. I've used it as a guide for interviewing practicing massage therapists and have been complimented on the research I've done. Since this is the only book I've read, I think that's saying alot. Great information on where to think about working once you've trained, how much setting up a business might cost, etc. and lists of other reliable resources for decision making. I'm very happy with this purchase and recommend this book to anyone considering training for a career in massage therapy .

This is an excellent work which covers both conventional
and alternative medicinal protocols. The author describes
the various massage methodologies which involve the
artful manipulation of soft tissue to achieve healing.
The craniosacral rhythmic therapies are described as part of
a spinal realignment regimen. In 1997, the author describes
how the National Institutes of Health released findings of
a "Consensus Panel reflecting the opinions of many experts on
acupuncture for pain. The panel found 'clear and promising
evidence' that acupuncture helps to relieve low back pain."
The book describes how Boswelia relieves chronic colitis.
In addition, the atherosclerosis protocol shows how the
condition may be prevented with a low fat diet, increased
intake of fruits and vegetables and various bridge techniques
of both conventional and alternative medicinal protocols
utilized in unison.

Own Your Health: Choosing The Best From Alternative & Conventional Medicine is a solidly written, nicely organized, and truly "reader friendly" guide to understanding and making choices among alternative and conventional medical treatments. Anecdotes, judgmental weighing of facts and statistics, pros and cons, and so much more fill the pages of this compendium of information. Own Your Health is a quite excellent and very highly recommended resource -- especially for those wrestling with chronic ills with symptoms that resist standard medical treatments.

Good, solid information--a great guide!

As a fellow medical writer, I'm very impressed with the information presented in this book, and with its easy-to-follow format. Besides telling the stories of various individuals who have found relief for their conditions with combinations of allopathic and complementary medicine, Weisman and Berman give readers detailed backgrounds of treatments/techniques such as meditation, Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine in sections called "A Closer Look." "What's the Evidence?" sections concisely summarize the published research on various treatment modalities. The "Take Action" sections offer practical advice for patients coping with pain, aging, cancer, menopause and childhood illnesses. Weisman's candor about her own recovery, as well as about her son's challenges facing a chronic illness, engages and empowers readers in a way that most self-help medical books cannot and do not. Whether you are a patient yourself, or are simply reading this to become better informed, you will surely own your health by the end of the book. Bravo to both Weisman and Berman.

A must have for practitioners meridian acupuncture
Helpful Votes: 75 out of 75 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-28
As the name implies, meridian based acupuncture places a prime importance on the meridian system in both the diagnosis and treatment of disease and dysfunction in the body. It is often called classical acupuncture because its theory is based on ancient classical texts like the "Ling Shu", the "Su Wen" and the "Nan Jing."

Meridian based acupuncture contrasts with the herbalized form of acupuncture taught in most TCM schools in the USA today. Where herbalized acupuncture has strict anatomical location of acupuncture points and assigns functions to points based on the "Eight Principles" like clearing, harmonizing, tonifying and reducing in order to effect the Zang-Fu, meridian based acupuncture stresses palpation to locate points and ascribes two functions to points... tonifying deficiency and reducing excess.

Until recently information on classical meridian based acupuncture was only available in workshops from practitioners like Miki Shima, Kiiko Matsumoto, Jefferey Yuen, Mark Seem and others. A few books on the Japanese style of meridian based acupuncture are available ("Introduction to Meridian Therapy, Denmei and Brown") and Mark Seem's books are based on meridian acupuncture ("A New American Acupuncture".)

Just as the body is viewed as a series of energetic zones and levels in meridian style acupuncture, Pirog designed his book in five sections leading step by step to a deeper understanding and application of Meridian Style acupuncture.

Pirog begins on a superficial level by laying out the basics of Meridian Style acupuncture: (1) finding and needling locally tender ahshi points, (2) determining the meridian(s) involved and (3) needling key distal points of the involved or energetically related meridian.

From here Pirog moves to a deeper understanding of the body's meridian complex, including the importance of secondary vessels in diagnosis and treatment. Pirog devotes a large part of the book to a discussion of the energetic function and therapeutic use of the classical groupings of acupuncture points: Luo-connecting, Xi-cleft, the Five-Shu transporting points, etc.

Where a standard TCM textbook makes a simple statement like "The He-sea points are used to treat the Fu organs", Pirog uses references from the Nan Jing and discussions of the Chinese characters to bring the energetics of the point to life. For instance, the character "He" translates as "uniting" or "connecting" giving the point the energetic function of connecting the meridian to the inner body with the ability to drain energy from the meridian into the body, hence its ability to treat the internal Fu organs. But the point has additional important functions. It can also draw excess energy from the inner body. It "connects" the distal and proximal segments of the meridian allowing the point to harmonize the meridian especially in cases of pain in the Yang meridians. Finally, because the He-sea points connect the "river" of the meridian to the "sea" of the body they may be used to treat systemic conditions. This explains why the He-sea point, LI-11, is often seen in point prescriptions for skin conditions.

Pirog also presents treatment plans for musculoskeletal pain and deficiency patterns, two commonly seen complaints in clinical practice. Using the teachings of Ngueyen Van Nghi as his basis, Pirog lays out a sophisticated method for determining the energetic location and depth of a disorder and treating it accordingly. Variations to the basic treatments include the use of Luo and Extraordinary Vessels, treating musculoskeletal pain caused by underlying organ pathology and treating systemic pain conditions for the patient who "hurts everywhere."

The book uses ample tables and illustrations and each section is cross referenced making the book very useful for the studious scholar as well as the busy clinician. It is a "must have" for any practitioner who has been to a meridian acupuncture workshop and wished there was a textbook available.
