spectacular-useful insight

This book will give you insight on how to add energetic healing to your own life. Listening to your own body... instead of someone else ideas or doctors suggestions. It is easy to read and easily applied to all areas of your life. The changes that I have seen in people's health and lives as a result of energetic healing are exciting. I liked how he has put questions in the book to get you to reflect upon where you are in your life and healing. Awesome work and waiting for more..............

Shallow and never gets to the point

I bought this book hoping that I could find some valuable insight as to the causes of illness from a more esoteric point of view and views on how one can change their life following a major illness. Instead, the author dances around the subject of the title, talking about all kinds of metaphysical concepts (from chakras and witchcraft to possession and psychic readings) but never addressing the actual issue at hand! I kept reading hoping to find *some* information where he would link these concepts to the illness at hand (or at least offer plausible suggestions) but he never does so in a satisfactory manner. The book is very disjointed in the way the information is presented with many chapters being only 1-2 pages in length and unrelated to the core subject. In addition, it is wrought with spelling mistakes and poor editing. It sounds as though the book was more a means of self-serving catharsis for the author rather than a means to provide valuable insight to his readers.

This book is an intermetiate level book upon Acupuncture points for an amateur - beginner or a sophomore. But an expert would find this insufficient. Do not hessitate to buy it if you are a beginner or intermediate.

Informing, but meridian charts too indepth; confusing

I liked the information I got from this book. Occasionally the written description was a bit "fuzzy", though mostly clear. Though the illustrations were usable, they were too detailed. I would find myself unable to use the charts as I was giving a massage or just learning. Otherwise, the writing was fine. I found this book useful in my career.

Worth reading

A worth while read, Livia shows a strong understanding of the history of Dao yin, or Qigong like practices. She admits the importance of help of insights from contemporary Qi gong practitioners, which a rare show of humility from an academic.. The book is useful in terms it gives an impression of the type of Chi cultivation practices by various different Taoist sects. The book rightly brings in to question some of the authenticity's of contemporary Qigong Masters in America. However the book in quite deficient in it explanations of the various Dao yin practices. Written descriptions are vague and do not describe the exercises sufficiently to be meaningful. I do not have the expectations of being able to learn dao yin from the book, but I would like to know general favour, or style of what these ancient exercise looked like. It is possible for archaeologist to do reconstructions to give the public an impression, so why not historians as well ? I feel here the big problem is that most academic works is the lack of practical experience of the subject they are translating and commentating on. Livia has done a lot Indian yoga, but she is a relatively new comer to Qi gong. While this gives her more of an insight into to Taoist esoteric practices than most academics it is not the same as Dao yin.

It should be remember that the academics are in the position, of people who are on the outside the temple making comments on, what life might be like inside the temple ? Yet they can be relied upon on giving a more un-bias account of the history and nature of esoteric practice. Where as people teaching a brand of contemporary practice have a vested interest in claiming the biggest and best. Livia book does arm the reader to some extent with the ability make a more informed choice.

The Science of Acupuncture

This is a useful adjunct to the pocket text by Stux and Pomerantz, but does not stand alone as a text for acupuncture. I would recommend it as a secondary text for those who already have one of the standard clinical texts, such as Deadman or Macciocia.

A good reference guide

The complete acupuncture cd-rom is not for the beginner. The acupuncture demonstration on video was interesting. It showed how to insert the needles and how moxibustion is used. The talk on acupuncture answered basic questions about acupuncture, such as, Is it safe? How does it work? How often do you have to be treated for a symptom? The CD teaches you what needles are used, how to insert them, how to use moxibustion, possible accidents you might need to be aware of and more but it explains each subject only briefly. It sections off all the channels of the body and explains where they are in text format which I feel for a beginner is too hard to understand. It would have helped if they gave you the point combinations for a particular condition and showed a picture with the points being used. Also, the diagrams of the bodies with the points shown on them was a bit blurry. On the plus side, the CD does offer 534 acupuncture studies to research. It also contains a handbook for ear acupuncture on the CD, giving you points for many conditions. All in all, it trys to cover everything you need to know about acupuncture, but covers it only briefly. It is a good reference CD, but I need to buy another book to have a more thorough understanding of all the points.

Important resource for parents of autistic children
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.

The author suggests a link between exposure to environmental toxins/heavy metals and autism/PDD. He also states that ineffective liver function is implicated. Although the author gets too technical at times, this is a very useful resource for parents of autistic children. To me it should be read together with William Shaw's book Biological Treatments for Autism and PDD for a more complete picture.

This book is a must for acudetox students and practicioners. The history and background of acupuncture as a treatment for substance abuse is given in detail. How acudetox came into being and the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association. As a certified acudetox specialist, I found this book to be informative and useful and have let patients read from it as they are detoxifying.

Author wants to advise readers of this book
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-12
I am the author of this book. I feel this is a very good book, however the publishers made a serious error in editing when they did this book, and did not send galley proofs to me before publication. Warning: the meridian charts are not correct. The POINTS on each chart, eg. key points on the stomach meridian, ARE CORRECT, but the meridian lines showing the paths of the meridians are not correct. The reader should refer to the text, and, perhaps, buy a seperate set of charts. P. S. people who have used this book tell me it is very helpful. Helen Saul
