For anyone looking to treat infertility disorders, I would highly recommend this book. The quality and sheer volume of information presented is quite impressive, and the same goes for her seminars. I would not suggest this book for anyone other than a TCM practitioner, as it is a professional text. The content is both highly specialized and should not be used by those without extensive training; besides, there are plenty of other introductory books that will give patients a more comprehensive view of TCM theory in an easily digestible format.

That said, this book is one of my favorites in the subject, and fully worth several times the purchase price!

I was referred to this book by a fellow friend who like me, is trying to conceive a baby over 40. This book talks with detail about how chinese medicine works and in particularly to help "strengthen" our reproduction systems. The information is very clear and detailed and can help anyone starting to explore the benefits of TCM. It enlightens the reader because it never dismisses the Western medical community, but talks about how the Eastern methods of TCM can enhance our already traditionally accepted practice of conventional medicine. It also talks about how TCM works well alone. However, it takes diligence and specialized practitioners to fully incorporate all of this info to practice. Finding a excellent Acupuncturist or Chinese doctor seems integral and the information is amass. I felt I learned quite a bit about Chinese medicine in just one night of reading, and I was already educated in many areas.

I've had chronic back pain all my life and have tried many different approaches to find relief. \ I have found that the Acupressure Warmup techniques to be very effective in relieving my pain instantly. Because my pain is chronic I find myself stiff and sore after work and in the morning when I wake up. After applying the techniques I can go throughout the day with much pain and muscle spasms.

In my massage practice, I encourage people to use self help for managing their health. This book is a great one to have for
in home care. Written & illustrated in a clear easy to use format, it gives the layperson simple instruction on point location. Utilizing tennis balls, it allows you to work on specific problem areas, using the body weight pressure to relieve aches & pains. The techniques are simple to use and are aided by the addition of meridian stretches shown in the back of the book. As an another bonus, symptoms of imbalance are included to guide your choice of areas to address. A great companion book to this one is Acupressure's Potent Points by Michael Reed Gach. I also highly recommend The Touch of Healing by Alice Burmeister, which incorporates the ancient Japanese healing art of Jin Shin Jyutsu.

The truly simple and amazing precedures explained in the book produce incredible results not only to relieve pain but to keep you from injury. I am in my 50's and play tennis four times a week. Prior to using the Acupressure warmup routine, I was prone to injury. I have been warming up with this method for five years now and have been pain and injury free, and it only takes 10 minutes! I have recommended this book to dozens of friends who have had similar success. My husband who travels a good deal, uses tennis balls on his back pressure points while driving or flying to relieve back pain. I highly recommend this book to young and old.

This book is a useful resource not only for helping me to manage my own aches and pains, but I also recommend (and frequently lend) this book to my patients. As a physical therapist, I am always looking for ways to teach people to take control of their own pain and this book acts as a great adjunct to my own treatments. I currently work with chronic pain patients and several of them have borrowed my book and subsequently ordered their own copy as these techniques have given them excellent relief.

Acupuncture, Meridian Theory and Acupuncture Points

Review Date: 2008-12-28
Summary: The meridian theory is an important component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is the study of the physiological function and pathological change on the meridians, and their related zangfu organs. The essential functions of the meridian system are to "transport qi and blood," "to maintain conductivity" and "to resist invasion of exogenous pathogenic factors." The meridian system distributes to all parts of the body. the endless circulation of qi and blood in the meridians is responsible for the maintenance of life and the variety of functions which support it. Over the last two thousand years, the meridian theory has been the guiding principle for the clinical practice in the realms of TCM, particularly in those of acupuncture, massage, and qigong. By combining the meridian theory with the theory of the zangfu organs and the etiology of TCM, one can thoroughly explain both the physiological activities and pathological change which take place in the body. In this manner, a theoretical basis for the principle of treatment in accordance with the differentiation of symptoms and signs was established. Physicians throughout Chinese history have all paid great attention to the study of meridians, which has now become an independent branch of learning in acupuncture and moxibustion

I bought this book as a reference work,at the beginning, but after going through it,I realized that it deserved being read more in detail. I could find a few pages on usually neglected issues, such as the historical meanings of some acupuncture points. I am carrying out a research study on the definitions of the acupuncture points in Ling Shu and Su Wen (in Chinese) and I hardly had ever found anything on this topic in a non-Chinese language book. Only one regret: no full analytical index, alas!

Applied Channel Theory is a misleading title for a deeper book. When I bought it I realized It started again chinese medicine theory but, fortunately, in a rather different way than other texts. It is more narrative than academic, and it enters into a profound explanation of physiology with practical implications. The main issue is you notice chinese medicine is not a simple system to apply directly from a course, but you must study a lot: first deep knowledge about human body, after points. Perhaps it is very obvious, but as western doctor I did not find this approach after buying and buying books or listening people explaining chinese medicine in courses, which it is so far long from the five phases or yin-yang. I recommend the book if you are looking for chinese body physiology and stressed concerning of channels employment.

Quite simply, this book is an underrated classic. One gets the best of both worlds in that it is a true collaborative work between a seasoned and experienced Chinese doctor and his American counterpart. I most appreciate the usage of Mr. Robertson of chinese character analysis in order to dissect the deeper meanings of the concepts being studied.

A treasure.

This is the book I wish I had written!!

It is simply one of the most fascinating and pracitical books on Traditional Chinese medicine to heve emerged in recent years. As Dr Wang himself said to his student and collaborator Jason D Robertson, you should not write "just another boring text book..." And that wish has certainly been fulfilled. This book is an exciting read, that draws together both the wisdom of the classics with current clinical practice. The text is very much alive, written as a conversational dialectic between Dr Wang and Jason D, in the time-honoured tradition of Huang Di and his physician Qi Bo, in the Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine. It addresses and repairs many of holes that the Cultural Revolution blew in Chinese Medicine and firmly 're-embodies' acupuncture energetics within the reality of the channel networks. Well done! Bravo! Gong Xi!

I don't know too many physicians who pick up a textbook and consider themselves qualified for an entire branch or subspecialty of medicine. Those who seek to add acupuncture to their practices almost universally do it out of frustration with drugs and surgery, and the quest to help their patients in ways that western medicine cannot. I fall into this category, as do several of my colleagues.

I was not issued this book through my training, but I have purchased a copy and have found it to be very valuable as a reference in many ways. I would highly encourage anyone who is undergoing, or considering undergoing, acupuncture education to get a copy of this book and add it to their library, and if you're already in practice it's critical. Since MANY patients who are seeking acupuncture do so for some complaint related to pain, having a larger armamentarium with which to treat them is beneficial to everyone. Get this book.

Finally there is a biomedical explanation of practical acupuncture system which anyone practicing acupuncture can immediately use. It is easy to read and easy to understand. Explanation of basic neuroanatomy and dynamics of acupoints immediately answers a lot of my practical questions. The best part is their unique easy to follow system which I start to use for pain problems. This book definitely will be the desk reference for many practitioners.

An excellent introduction to the new acupuncture

This book bridges the gap between the old and new acupuncture. What was previously seen as an exotic, traditional and obscure art is now simplified and quantified by these authors in a way that fits it directly into modern scientific thinking, and by extension, into the work of any contemporary health practitioner who has to treat pain. This book is all that a currently-practicing MD, osteopath, chiropractor, or other practitioner needs to incorporate acupuncture into their work, and in doing so to thoroughly transform and improve their ability to relieve most pain symptoms, and by amplifying the body's own natural healing capability, to cure many common causes of chronic and acute pain. I recommend it wholeheartedly, and anticipate that it will have a far-reaching effect.

I am a western trained Osteopathic Family Physician with a strong interest in integrating acupuncture into my clinical practice. I have studied numerous Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) texts and find myself lost and confused. My western trained mind has a difficult time grasping Qi, Essence, Channels, the Four Examinations, the Eight-Principle Pattern Identification. . . What I can grasp are the concepts of Biomedical and Neuroanatomic acupuncture as presented in "Biomedical Acupuncture for Pain Management". If you are a western trained health professional and are interested in learning more about acupunture or are interested in a practical book that can help you integrate acupuncture into your clinical practice, then this book is for you. I strongly recommend that you also look at "Acupuncture, An Anatomic Approach" by Houchi Dung. I carry both of these books back and forth to work every day. I use them and refer to them that often.

Dr. Tin Yau So is often called the "Father of American Acupuncture." He was the founder of the New England School of Acupuncture, the oldest school of Chinese medicine in the U.S., and was one of my grand-teachers.

This book is a very detailed description of the location of acupuncture points. It details not only how to find each point but also how to needle the points and what reaction to expect (a feature unique to this text). Dr. So also gives lengthy effects for each point.

As Dr. So was trained in China prior to the communists' invention of "TCM" style acupuncture, many of his point location are not standard compared with current Chinese texts. Thus, his locations and uses of points are often provocative, questioning the material that many TCM practitioners learned and use. That said, this book is good for both beginner and advanced practitioners as it contains information no longer "politically correct" by communist Chinese standards.

A must have for all professional practitioners of Chinese medicine!

First of all, the missing star is because I havn't finished reading it yet and wish to be honest aas to my knowledge of the book. I started a pulse diagnosis course the same week I recieved the book. This gave me a huge and helpful leap into it. Hammer, as he does is his wonderful book "Dragon rises red bird flies", has captured a view of chinese medicine not found in other sources. He lies somewhere in the vast plain between the Maccoicia TCM taught in most schools today and the very spiritual and sometimes non-clinical thinking of Larre and De la Valle. This book is a happy middle. Very clinical and hands on yet so different from and far more complex and colorful than the usual training of pulse diagnosis taught in the schools. Highly recommended for the more in-depth curious and dedicated practitioner (whom I hope I am...).

This is another outstanding book by Dr. Leon Hammer. This book continues with many of the psycho-medical and five element themes Hammer used in his first book Dragon Rises - Red Bird Flies. This text is easy to read. The concepts are easy to follow. The writing is comprehensive and fairly ties many schools of thought and other predominant TCM texts together. This book is good for practitioners of all skill levels and schools of thought. This is a must read for any serious TCM practitioner!

I was looking for a book that can teach me the secrets of pulse diagnosis but the problem was the terminology. I went to seek help from aryvedic practioners but could not comprehend. "Chinese Pulse Diagnosis" is a readable and highly informative approach on the subject. Pulse diagnosis is a difficult art to master and more difficult is its teaching. Leon I. Hammer has used the latest method of teaching for this ancient art which I hope will give a new life to art. I understood many things of the art for the first time though I read them in many other books before.

Comprehensive Coverage of a Challenging Subject

Review Date: 2007-01-11
Having taken the basic level of instruction in this type of pulse diagnosis, I have to say that even with support, the very comprehensive nature of this massive tome is challenging. On the other hand, what Dr. Hammer is intending to do is to clarify and perhaps enlarge a particular method of pulse diagnosis. It is a refreshing change from what to my thinking is an endless rehash of quotes from Classic volumes translated from Chinese, or rewrites of same. Li Shi Zhen's work notwithstanding, we need more people to bring this type of material forward if pulse diagnosis is to be promoted fully here in the west. Dr. Hammer has tried mightily to be specific and describe both the pulse qualities and their implications from both his and his teacher Dr. Shen's point of view. Anyone wishing to see a more complete (if frighteningly detailed) discussion of pulse diagnosis should at the very least read and give some serious thought to what's presented by Dr. Hammer here, even if they are skeptical about the approach. This book should taken seriously by all English speaking Chinese medicine practitioners, whether they ultimately agree with it or not. It has that much to say. I myself am still trying to get a handle on the initial material. The book has few competitors in english in terms of detail and possible clinical benefits for the reader. What I have already got from it has changed my practice.

The clinical handbook of internal medicine is a truly useful clinical reference. It contains a wealth of information and clinical tips relevant to the practice of Chinese medicine in the western world. The authors have considered differences in diet and other lifestyle factors between Western and Chinese patients in their analysis of disease presentations and their solutions. The herbal section is comprehensive and has insights into commonly seen clinical variations not considered in other works (to my knowledge). Its compact size makes it easy to carry around and its clear layout makes finding the relevant information easy. Some more information on acupuncture points and protocols would improve it, however, the authors comment that internal medicine is the province of herbal medicine is fair. I can't wait for the second volume (when is it due?).

I am an avid amateur student of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Because I do only independent study, I find this book a little bit terse for my needs. The material of this book is very complete, and it is presented in the most useful possible form for reference and review. Almost all the information is put into self-explanatory tables that essentially anyone could follow. The organization is so perfect that nothing could possibly be any better. It is like the ultimate set of class notes from a very good course on diagnosis. However, if you don't HAVE a course to go to and if you don't HAVE a teacher to enlarge a little bit on the content, you will probably need a bigger, wordier text (like Tie-Tao Deng's text) to go with this one. Still, the organization is so exceptional that this book has to be of considerable value to any student of TCM. (If you are already a master, you don't need any book, do you?)
