Whatever some people may say--I just know that both of my maternal grandparents followed this book for some 50 years and both lived very long and healthy lives. My grandfather died when he was 93 and my grandmother who just turned 90 is currently traveling in Europe and stands on her head once a day for improved blood circulation. Fasting is not easy but as they say: "no pain no gain." Also, the book goes well with a yoga exercise routine. I am currently looking to buy this book for a friend. Five stars.

I first read Paul Bragg in Russian translation. I was in my mid-teens and my father was "experimenting" with fasting. Bragg's braggish style resonated with my teenage mind and I developed a quick respect for his way-of-the-Fakir-mind-over-matter-cheerleading-inspirational style. I "experimented" with fasts and left it at that. I revisited his writing in my mid-twenties, already in English. I bought this very book and... felt annoyed by his style (I was working on my Master's in Counseling and the "scientist-practitioner" in me yearned for more facts and more empirically stated rationale). I nevertheless once again "experimented" with fasts and left it that. Then, in my early thirties I bought Fuhrman's book on fasting and finally satisfied my "itch" for a scientific presentation of fasting. I resumed my experimentation with fasts and finally integrated them into my lifestyle. While this is the end of my story and one possible intepretation of it might be that while Bragg "didn't do it" for me, Fuhrman "did," another possible interpretation of this story might be that if it hadn't been for Bragg, I might have never picked up Fuhrman. My point is this: Fuhrman is the new Bragg, he is all science and that's great, but there is something to be said about Bragg's larger-than-life braggish adventures. Fasting, while a fast-track to health, is a slow-go kind of experience while you are in it - and I recommend you stock up on some "fasting pulp fiction," on some fun reading about fasting that can help you "cowboy up" on Day 3 of your two-week long water-only-fast.

This book is similiar to a big infomercial for fasting. The authors tell all the great benefits of fasting, but have very little (if any) facts backing up their statements. I like to double-check references and studies that are quoted when reading health/nutrition literature and I was not able to do this, I just had to take the authors' word for it, which sometimes left me wondering.

One statement that left me scratching my head is found on page 17, and reads "Dairy farmers found by giving cows salt blocks to lick, they drink more water. The more water they drink, the more milk produced. But the result is that the average quart of milk contains the extremely high content of 1 1/2 grams of salt per quart! Go past any American school and look at the children. You will be amazed by how many of them are overweight, lack stamina and the spark of youth. Most are heavy drinkers of commercial milk, and most foods they eat contain high concentrations of salt!"

I have no idea how the author correalated high salt intake to obese children?!? Obese children are obese because they eat too much fast food, candy, soda and do not exercise, THEY ARE NOT OBESE BECAUSE THEY DRINK MILK! Yes, they eat a lot of salt, but it's not why they are fat. There are others factors at play.

The majority of the book touts a raw food, vegetarian diet for longevity, health and energy and has nothing to do with fasting whatsoever. Some of the topics include, the downfalls of modern medicine, exercise for energy, get plenty of sunshine and fresh air, eat raw foods as much as possible and of course, stay away from the junk. This is all information that any health conscious person already knows. About the only thing I learned about fasting from the book was that the author fasts one day a week, and up to 10 days four times a year. And only with distilled water.

Other downfalls include the extra large print, like they were trying to stretch the book into more pages than it needs to be. And the constant references to their other line of products, like Apple Cider Vinegar and Olive Oil, neither of which have anything to do with fasting.

If you are totally new to fasting for health, or a couch potato who wants to know more about health and nutrition in general, this book may give you some helpful information all in one place. Otherwise, most of the information can be gleaned by doing a Google search for "fasting."

Excellent advice for living healthy!!

I am truly thankful for the information presented in The Miracle of Fasting. I had an ulcerated leg that was destined to be amputated from a lack of circulation. I tried everything to save it. I almost gave up the fight until I read this wonderful book. I put the advice that Patricia Bragg gave in the book into practice and started fasting as much as my body would tolerate. After 5 weeks of a radical diet change and some fasting I noticed some improvement and over time my ulcers disappeared and I'm happy to say I have all 10 toes and 2 happy feet. I am healthier and very VERY thankful for " THE MIRACLE OF FASTING" Buy the book! You'll never be the same!

I've read quite a few books on EFT (or tapping), and this is definitely one of my favorites. A real keeper. I've bought some unread that I regretted, but this I had read in advance of ordering, and it is excellent. I'm just glad it is in print and available through Amazon.

This book presents a simple and effective way to address anxiety, pain, and depression. I would highly recommend this book and others (Tapping the Healer Within, by the founder of Thought Field Therapy, Roger Callahan). It is easy to follow and effective. You can tap anywhere, whenever you need rapid relief.

This book is an excellent introduction to EFT. It is easy to understand, and allows the reader to put to use, the EFT techniques right away. It is basic, and I would recommend Gary Craig's EFT manual for even more information and variations of EFT (as he is the founder). However, I found this author's take on the techniques just as effective. She also writes in such a way that you feel like she is talking to you personally. I recommended this book to a friend who bought it and found it just as useful as I did.

The information as far as text (information) is excellent; however, It would be much better if it came with full color pictures instead of simple drawings--which makes the points hard to find.

A much better approach (with full color [real] pictures) is:
*****ACUPRESSURE -Naturally Better. By: Carola Beresford Cooke, Peter Albright.

It gets to the point--literally speaking--without so much unnecessary explanation. By the way, I found out about this book through somebody else's previous review (on this book).

Along with "The Secret," tapping energy meridians are useful tools for reaching emotional balance. But this book is too short to really explain the technique; it is concurrently too short and too redundant. Gallo's "Energy Tapping" is more helpful with specific guidelines for handling specific issues.

This little book is a 'how to ...' manual to help people who have aches and pains or an emotional problem which they feel is intruding too much into their lives, like a fear of hights.

It is very easy to read and gives a very good description of the do-it-yourself 'tapping' technique which is very similar to acupuncture. If there is one thing wrong with the book, it is that the technique is described in a way which so simple to follow and easy to do, that you feel that it can't work. Don't worry, it does.

The book does exactly the same job as a classy one-day seminar, but for a lot less money. If you want to get rid of an ache or a worry, then this is the book for you!

This book is full of good added material on the subject of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). I give it only 4 stars because I feel that everyone who really wants to learn the correct way to apply EFT will need to order the DVDs from Gary Craig's (the inventor) website, and read his free manual. Seeing is believing, in this case.

But, reading this book is very useful for those who wish to be quickly introduced to EFT, which is how I did it. I strongly recommend searching out videos on top of this, though.

EFT is the real deal. These tapping techniques consist of tapping with your fingers on certain accupressure points on your face and body that are called, "energy meridians." The main theme of EFT is that the cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body's energy system. The theory claims that if you were "tuned into" your negative emotion with your thoughts, tapped on all the meridians, you would be able to remove the disruption(s) from your energy system, thus curing you of the distress.

It's weird, but it works! It sounds too good to be true, but it IS true nonetheless. I've been able to put a few fears and other negative emotions behind me, and I feel I have more freedom. I'm only getting started and I can't wait to see what's at the end of the "rainbow..."

What's new about changing behaviors with affirmations? I wish I could return this book - I wasted $9.95 plus S&H when I could have used that money for a good meal with friends. Don't waste your time or money - this book IS useless and went into the trash.

I really believe this book is excellent for those TCM students that are of intermediate level(For beginers buy The Web That has No Weaver). Maciocia's book, I find is very common in Accupunture schools along with his book on pulse diagnosis. If the student understands basic TCM concepts and wants to expand his/her knowledge, whether a TCM student or a student in another type of Complementary Alternative Medicine, this is the next step. This book is through, concise, and easily understood.

Energy healing has worked for me- an authoritative book
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-12-12
I have bought many different energy based books, and used different energy based techniques, with great results.

Quantum Touch taught me the importance of breath and how to move energy, and the principles of resonance and entrainment. EFT taught me how to release negative emotions within two minutes by tapping on specific energy points. Reiki taught me the importance of healing touch, and using Universal Life Force energy effortlessly. Matrix Energetics taught me the importance of intention, and active imagination. I could go on, Qigong, Reiki, Touch of healing, Yoga, Tibetans, Huna..

So, imagine how gratifying it is to finally read a book by a mainstream psychotherapist, who uses energy testing, and affirmation, and intention as part of the healing process. The energy practice in this book is Kinesiology discovered by Dr George Goodheart.

Here we have a book which offers a complete energy system overview, and shows the connection between energy, emotions, and intention, and how your 12 Meridian Channels are tied to specific emotions, and specific organs. Because most of what goes on inside us is unconscious, it can be difficult to even discover what the problem may be, but energy testing a specific intention, can show which organ is affected, and a simple affirmation or intention shift can cause you to test strong.

In this book your Thymus is the master switch for your energy system. If someone's heart tests weak, this is connected to the emotion of anger. Sadness, fear, guilt, anger, and depression are connected to different organs. A series of simple tests and affirmations can bring everything back into balance.

This is definitely one of the best books I have read on Energy Medicine, if not the best.

If you are new to energy medicine, I recommend you get the Energy Medicine Kit by Donna Eden, which shows the testing being demonstrated, energy zipups and more advanced techniques, including a five minute daily routine, and Quantum Touch by Richard Gordon.

EFT is a simple tapping process useful for letting go of troubling emotions. Imagine easily letting go of issues such as anger, anxiety, fear, forgiveness, stress, procrastination, traumas. You can download a free manual at emofree.com, and buy various books on Amazon.

Acupuncture meridians and the Emotions

In this ground-breaking book, Dr. Diamond presents his research findings concerning the links between specific acupuncture meridians and various precisely delineated emotional states. The connection between the acupuncture meridians and the organs of the body has been known about for centuries, and underlies much Chinese, Japanese and Korean traditional healing, and with Dr. Diamond's work connecting the meridians and the emotions we now have a link between the emotions and the physical body. Although it has been accepted that our emotional state can affect our physical well-being, and vice versa, Dr. Diamond's pioneering research is the first to examine this mechanism in detail.

This book should be required reading for anyone practicing, or hoping to practice the healing arts, either through conventional or through complementary medicine.

Just dopey.

This book has been essential for me in developing a concept of the healing force in myself and in everybody -- Life Energy, as the title succinctly puts it -- and how this force can be activated. The specific details about our emotions -- and how they relate to the acupuncture system -- are fascinating. I particularly find helpful and thought-provoking Dr. Diamond's use of etymology (the origins of words) in pinpointing and evoking emotional states. The many photographs and humorous or touching anecdotes -- all these contribute to this highly readable, very therapeutic volume. I find Dr. Diamond's affirmations and the acupuncture points, which are clearly illustrated, wonderfully helpful in creating a daily routine for health and happiness. I have gone on to read many other books by Dr. Diamond, but this one remains basic and essential. I highly reccomend this book.

Before I bought this book I was hoping that it was written by an actual massage therapist and not just another marketing person writing another marketing book for another profession that they know nothing about. Yea! I got what I wanted! Not only is Monica Roseberry a very knowledgeable massage therapist but she also knows marketing inside and out! My business is soaring now! She has opened my eyes to how my clients think and what they really need. This is key. Now I look better, I act better, I cater better to my clients. They book more. They pay more. They refer more than ever before! If you've got the energy to do more massage...If you've got the will to provide better, nicer, more professional service to your clients...If you want to learn how to advertize and draw people in like crazy... If you want to learn how to make more money than ever before buy this book. In the book Monica gives you her email address and phone number! Blew my mind. I emailed her and to my surprise the next day she called me on the phone! How many authors would do that? I've seen advertising programs on the internet. El rip-offo! I think I paid like $20 for this book. Now that's a deal. No, it's not a miracle. You have to be a really wonderful person to have lots of clients. You have to know how to take excellent care of yourself...organic food, yoga, self massage, prayer, meditation, and whatever else you can do to stay healthy. Healing work is not easy and that's why 95% of those that start it drop out. If you want to be in the top .5% buy this book. Pretty soon I'm going to move to a new place and start a new practice. Asheville, NC is said to be totally saturated with massage therapists. Am I worried? Yes, a bit but now that I've read this book I feel ten times more confident than before. I can do it and so can you. If you read this book and really do what it says to do you will be way beyond many therapists that have years of practice under thier belt. No joke! Good luck and happy healing.

This is a great book for those who did not learn about cover letters, resumes and basic business skills in high school. I was disappointed that the content of this book is so basic, marketing 101. There is no new ground here. I am also really frustrated that the only advice that more experienced massage therapist's that write books or articles have is to spend a lot of money on marketing, (business cards, flyers, etc. .),pay for your liability insurance, your license and all of the other expenses that will most definitely be incurred then discount your services. This is the same problem I have with most of the organizations of massage. Massage Therapists invest a lot of care, money and time into this field and the bottom line message that I have gathered over the past two and a half years is to discount my services to retain and attract new clients.

Although the content of this book is valuable it seems that it was written for massage graduates who are fresh out of high school.

I have heard some horror stories about massage therapist's that are hard to believe. If you are one of those therapist's then you need this book too. I also think that this book is over-priced.

This was a textbook that I used at my massage school. It has numerous typos and inconsistency in so many levels. For example, some items are listed A, B, C in that order, while the corresponding figure or table shows the items in different order such as A, C, B. Furthermore, sometimes the name listed in the text is described in the table with a different name, so it took me some time to figure out they mean the same thing.

I was an editor before and through my own experience, I know it's a tedious and hard job to make a book with no typos or errors. However, this book is too much. There are more than 10 typos, index in last pages show wrong pages, and the description of each chapter is not good. I don't think the authors know pathology, or at least don't know how to describe it. In the nervous system chapter, for example, I spent long time to try to understand each function of the brain parts, but still didn't understood it. Then I read a review book, which I don't think describes very well, rather pretty concise, even so, I immediately understood what it describes. My instructor also said she had been having a hard time to teach with this book. I don't know why schools use this book.

In many respects, this is the worst book I have ever had, and I'm not exhilarating. Instructors, please don't use this book as a textbook for your students. For students, who unfortunately have to use this book because your school chose it, I would recommend to buy some reference book.

Nice start for the budding massage enthusiast or short 500 hour program text. Only covers Western Modalities aka Swedish style massage. Very brief intro to anatomy and movement. Very little about pathology. On the plus side it is a very easy read and the break down of muscle attatchement and origins is very clear and clean. You could make flash cards out of the info on them! Nice. There is far too little information on the cultural variations interpretations of touch experience. For just one text get the Mosby's. But if you add Trail Guide to the Body and one solid book on Oriental medicine that includes meridians and theory and a good color book with lots of muscles in it, take a year of Qigong and find you can listen to a quiet cd without falling asleep - you will be ready to start massage school. Trust me, staying awake while listening to relaxing music is a skill!

I've been in the alternative health world for a long time so was very interested in perusing this book. I was pleasantly surprised how thorough and concise Alan Smith's book is. Concise, yet, full of very valuable and researched material, this book gives the reader glimpse into a variety of therapies available to enhance health.

I can see this book being of great importance to those entering the field of alternative health, or those wanting to know what alternative/complementary therapies are available and what they consist of. The options are plentiful and it doesn't look like Alan missed any.

Great resource, a must-have in the library, and informative, Alan gives the reader options to healing. Highly recommend.

Excellent, balanced, complete.

This is the most comprehensive complete listing of alternative health approaches. I am very familiar with about a dozen listed and all were given a even balanced write up. Well done. A complete reference work. Achieving health without meds.

For some reason, I thought this was going to be more of a guide to help those of use with health problems instead of just a list of complementary and alternative therapies.

It wasn't that long ago that your family doctor was the only option when you were faced with health issues. You'd make an appointment and he'd prescribe a pill. If that magic pill didn't help you'd get another. Finally, given no other alternative, you'd just learn to live with your pain symptoms.

Today, it seems that more and more people are becoming open to complimentary and alternative health resources. Many are unhappy with their present care. Others are simply looking for ways to compliment their current treatments.

Although the actual methods vary substantially, most of these therapies look to the root cause of dis-ease and then seek to understand, release, or heal that issue. Still, the sheer number of options can be overwhelming for the average person. Where to even start?

In my opinion, reading UnBreak your Health is a very good way to begin. This book provides quite an extensive list of possible alternative and complementary therapies. Moreover, for each method, the author provides important contact information and comments from individuals who have actually tried the option.

Thorough and reader friendly

"UnBreak Your Health: The Complete Guide to Complementary & Alternative Therapies" by Alan E. Smith presents a comprehensive guide useful for when you want to explore other options beyond traditional medicine. If you are considering complementary or alternative therapies you are not alone! According to a statistic presented in the introduction, in the year 2002 over half of all Americans turned to trying one of these therapies. Complementary and alternative therapies are positive on many levels. They focus on the fact that each person is a "unique individual composed of mind, body and spirit (or life-force energy)" and that each problem should be solved by tailoring the treatment to the specific person. Instead of focusing on the specific symptoms or issues as traditional medicine oftentimes does, complementary and alternative therapies often look at the body as a whole and work to heal the entire entity to make the body function in a more efficient manner. They go to the inner source of the problem rather than just treating the topical symptoms.

The author divides the different therapies up into three areas: the body, the mind and the energy/spirit. The "body" section presents an overview of such therapies from the familiar like chiropractic care and massage to the lesser known like Emei Qigong and the Nambudripdad Allergy Elimination Technique. The "mind" chapter focuses on therapies such as Art Therapy, Guided Imagery, Hypnosis, and Traumatic Incident Reduction. Finally, the "energy/spirit" section focuses on therapies which use human energy to heal such as Acupuncture, Crystal Bowl Therapy, Polarity Therapy and Qi Gong.

Each therapy examined in the book has a description explaining the origins, beliefs and techniques used in the method. After most descriptions is a favorite part of mine called "user comments" which aids in understanding how effective these therapies are. These are comments from actual users of these particular methods. It is very interesting to see the results that these people have had using the different techniques. This section makes the book more personable instead of strictly a reference guide. Websites are listed for most therapies if readers would like to seek out more information or specifics.

I recommend this thorough guide to complementary and alternative therapies to anyone who is frustrated with conventional medicine's approach to his health issues or to anyone who just wants to educate himself as to what is out there in terms of non-traditional care. "UnBreak Your Health: The Complete Guide to Complementary & Alternative Therapies" presents so many different options and techniques, some of which I never knew existed, and the information is presented in a very reader friendly and easy to use way.

I bought this book to work on a paper on auricular acupuncture, including its historical development, treatment modalities, important personages and writings, etc. This book was very helpful. It has lots of illustrative pictures to help understand the materials. It has more information on this subject in one place than any other resources I found.

I have been given the 2nd Edition of this manual and now read it in its entirety. I am indeed grateful for the gift as it clearly contains a wealth of material. However, before purchasing the 3rd edition I would need to know what was added. I would actually seek it out in a bookstore first. I suspect the answer to this question might lead me to purchase an alternative text.

Oleson's book is written primarily as a manual to define by use of 2 dimensional line drawings (a few with color) the known acupunture points on the front and back of the ear. There is a very limited discussion of historical differences between the French (Nogier system) and the modernized Chinese system developed after Mao Se Tung's revival of interest in their native Chinese acupuncture. Mao Se Tung's efforts to create a troop of "barefoot doctors" to address the masses of health problems without reliance on Westernized medicine rapidly incorporated some of Nogier's discoveries while synthesizing it with China's modern test trials and discoveries as well. The author is careful to point out the ancient literature on acupuncture which has served as the solid foundation for "body acupuncture" only rarely seems to incorporate the ear microsystem. He also includes for the practitioner's discretion the specific points which have evolved differently since the 1950s between Nogier's and the Chinese somatotopic designations.

I certainly enjoyed seeing the orderly presentation of a vast menu of point options (some of which seem to duplicate positions under a different name when used for a different application -- but the relevant similarities in action and their close proximity if not identical location often seem to make sense). He does not particularly address this phenomenon nor mention when multiple names seem to apply to nearly the same region. Doing so might help in learning and mastery of this massive body of material.

I missed seeing more scientific demonstration of the point actions and outcomes or efficacy (unfortunately this is still a problem plaguing the whole discipline of acupuncture). There are very good explanations for anatomical landmarks of the ear and of other body systems that might be influenced by the ear points, which compensate reasonably well for the 2 dimensional line drawings. Likewise, the manual contains a basic brief glossary of anatomical and clinical or physiologic terms which will be helpful to persons with varying nonmedical backgrounds.

I was frustrated with a few of the illustrations which listed a specific point and then placed the circle to define it completely off the ear diagram with no explanation -- I had to refer to another text by Hecker, Steveling and Peuker to figure these out. However, for the most part it serves the purpose claimed -- a easily accessible, comprehensive point manual. (I don't yet have enough hands-on experience to confirm that its coverage is exhaustive for the current state of the art).

I did not rate Oleson's manual as a 5 star, because the newer book by Hecker, Steveling and Peuker (Microsystems Acupuncture, The Complete Guide to Ear-Scalp-Mouth-Hand) published 2006 offers what is to me an absolutely critical improvement and somewhat more expanded textual information. Most importantly it contains very high quality photographs of the human ear (the majority of which were in color). The vastly improved depth perception of these excellent pictures and the related zoom images rapidly sorts out some of the confusion that arises from trying to parse what Oleson intends to say about points that are hidden under surfaces. The locations become more "alive". Hecker et al's book also has inserted text/picture boxes which clearly highlight the differences between different practice systems in a more orderly manner (e.g. Nogier's, the Chinese, and other contributors).

The value of pictures over drawings in signficant enough for me that I would now hesitate to purchase the 3rd edition of the Auriculotherapy Manual unless it matched this level of realism. I do realize that Hecker et al's text is produced within a German/European school, and may thus may add some additional slants from their style. Thus, both books could then be helpful and I anticipate Oleson's will continued to be respected. For learning and rapidly finding points I will be relying the most on Hecker,et al.

My chiropractor recommended this book, this edition as being the best source for acupuncture points and protocol. He has been using it for several years with great success. The book is well-organized, easy to understand and thorough.

I'm really looking forward to using this book for my own health and well-bing!

This is a well organized and beautifully presented introduction to auriculotherapy. Helpful features for the practitioner include a lay-flat spiral binding (perfect for the classroom/workshop setting, where one can refer to the book while examining a real person's ear), a colorful pull-out chart (with points clearly labeled and easy to read), and points from both the Chinese and French systems. There's a useful introductory section on the history and theory of ear acupuncture. The points are grouped in multiple ways, so one can easily find points via anatomical location on the ear, functional grouping (body systems and special points), and therapeutic use (particular disorders or conditions). Interesting additional material includes a discussion of electrotherapy and ear acupuncture and suggestions for diagnosis.
