I think of supplements as an insurance policy.

The main reason that I take USANA is that the supplements are Bioavailable. Many vitamins do not dissolve quickly enough (20 minutes or less) to be used by the body. To test, place vitamins in a glass of water. If they don't dissolve within 20 minutes or so, they are likely not going to be absorbed by your body.

This book helped me to understand that not all vitamins are the same, and, that some of the most popular vitamins may not be fully absorbed. Things are often not as they seem.

I have been using vitamins and food supplements since 2003, and realized "deep down" that I was doing the right thing. However, I was looking for a body of well-researched evidence to back up my belief. This book gave me that.

It contains medical evidence (sometimes quite technical) of the critical importance of nutritional supplements in the overall well-being of a person's health. Dr. Strand discusses the basis of major diseases, and how vitamins can help.

I realized, too, that the money I have spent buying good-quality vitamins has been worth it, because not all vitamins are created equal. You get what you pay for.

I found this book most empowering and exciting with regard to taking control of my health.

Dr Strand begins his most enlightening book by telling us about his wife's debilitating condition, diagnosed as fibromyalgia. In a situation whereby they had nothing to lose, Mrs Strand took some vitamin supplements and her condition gradually but almost miraculously improved.

Virtually overnight, Dr Strand became a "converted doctor". It's certainly not very scientific for a doctor to make such conclusions based on anecdotal evidence, but Dr Strand goes on to identify and explain the root cause of many serious ailments from heart disease to cancer as "oxidative stress".

He describes our bodies as "rusting away" from metabolic activities that consume oxygen and release harmful free radicals. He provides a simple answer on how to win the battle from within - reduce oxidative stress by increasing the amount of antioxidants in the body.

Why is the significance of homocysteine in patients prone to heart attacks and strokes discovered so late? Why don't doctors recommend Coenzyme Q10 as a supplement to reduce the risk of heart attack? Why are vitamin B supplements ignored while cholesterol lowering drugs drugs are prescribed with such enthusiasm? Dr Strand goes into the politics and economics of medical research which may make him some enemies in the fraternity.

Whether it's cardiomyopathy, cancer prevention, arthritis or autoimmune disorders, Dr Strand's advice seems focussed on optimal doses (higher than RDA doses) of various vitamins, minerals, glutathione, alpha-lipoic acid and supplements like glucosamine sulphate and grape seed extract. Dr Strand provides lots of anecdotal evidence on how these supplements can work for a wide range of illnesses. It does look like vitamin C and E are good for almost every condition. His attacks on money-driven physicians get tiring after a while. I personally think that he didn't have to explain why most doctors don't want to recommend cheap supplements that reduce the number of indications for heart or orthopaedic surgery.

Do I believe in Dr Strand's theories? Well, as far as the need for optimal levels of vitamins, minerals and even herbal supplements is concerned, I agree. Whether remarkable recoveries recounted from the good doctor's practice are typical is something for which I have my reservations.

Nevertheless, it should be noted that the wellness industry is already booming even before Dr Strand wrote this book. Expensive vitamins, nutritional supplements and other healthcare and wellness products are all over the pharmacies and even supermarkets, often promoted by aggressive sales people with limited medical knowledge. I wouldn't say that these folks are more concerned about their potential customers' health than doctors who discourage their patients from spending so much on supplements that don't really work for their condition.

This book rolls back some of the falacious defensiveness of traditional medical thinking and shows the existing bias against nutritional medicine.

Dr Strand is blunt and forthright about his findings and is careful to give credit to the treatments that were effective, and to identify those that were not. He does not decry pharmaceuticals nor does he promise nutritionals as the end of all cures. Instead, he advocates the use of them in combination when possible. His writing does reveal a competition between pharmaceutically trained physicians and those who dispense and recommend nutritionals.

His case studies are excellent, and he retains a sense of reality and knowledgable insight afforded him by his traditional medical training that has now been tempered by his own experience.

If you want the truth on nutritional medicine, which is sorely lacking in our medical schools who are in some ways subsidized by big pharma, this will please you...and perhaps even make you more healthy.

I immediately came home and ordered this 4th edition book. Wow, has it grown. The book is everything I expected and needed. The information is so clear and easy to understand and would be very helpful to anyone who has a interest in pathology.

Over all a very good book if you are looking for an alternative to certain medications. Eventhough it was great to read the detailed explainations, I wish the author included a list of breif steps, or short cuts if you will. I know there has got to be a better way to help you fall asleep and rest.

Having done EFT for years using only the [...] site, I ordered this book for a friend (who tends not to value anything one can get for free). My purchase was sight unseen (other than the look inside feature) and based on reviews of others. The friend read the book and raved about how great it was. But never really applied the technique. Probably less to do with the book than the friend not being ready to clear his issues. You can lead a horse to water...

I had post trauma stress disorder from my sons accident and could not get the image of his badly damaged leg out of my mind day or when I lay down at night....For months I had prayed for God to remove it, I used counter thought messaging to no avail. I knew God could but many times he wants us to use tools he has given use to heal and balance our body.. I knew the benefits of acupressure and balancing of our body and it energies.... When I saw this book I said WOW! I bought it and went through the post trauma stress disorder steps always beginning each phrase with [God] not [I] help me accept myself even though I'M upset about what happened and the continued steps
It was unbelievable after only 4 times of going through the steps I no longer had the horrible picture vivid in my mind anymore.... I truly recommend this book with always putting God at the beginning of each phrase!!!!

I am finishing up my first year as an Oriental Medicine student and this book is without a doubt my favorite and most used. Great thumb indexes to locate chapters on specific meridians easily. Yin and Yang meridians are paired together but separate chapters, making studying very easy. Excellent graphics for point locations, no nonsense descriptions of functions and indications and lengthly discussion on the most used points. If your school is not making this it's standard text...find a new school!

Invaluable; nothing else out there more extensive and exhaustive. The study cards are a must-have for students; they have been a tremendous help for me in point location/memorization and there is nothing else like them in the market. Great acupuncture reference books are few and far between; this is the "premiere" reference.

I generally agree with the positive reviews of the content, save for the needle depths in some cases are possibly too deep. However, for such an expensive book, it should not fall apart in 3 months or less. The hard cover completely fell off mine and the book split in half. Other people I know have not had the same problem, but a high percentage of those books look like they will within short order.

i am no expert in the field of massage but i am no stranger...
i have bought several books on erotic massage and some of them seemed to be better described as foreplay techniques... until i got this book. wow. some of the techniques, i have seen before but some are new or different spins on classic moves. i like the body lift for example. can't say i've seen that before. for some ppl, it may be ideal to read this book first but get his laminated card set and stick it up when you actually perform the strokes until you master them. while massage should just "flow", i believe these techniques take awhile to be added to your skillset. all in all, great book.

Some tips: Stay with a comfortable rhythm, Be sure your hands are warm before your start, use more oil if your partner has hairy legs.

This book does offer pictures to guide how the strokes should go.
However, if you're already "into" giving massages, you probably know most of what is here.

Another book I highly recommended, It's ideal for any romantic occasion is Sex and the perfect lover by Mabel Iam. (Hardcover)

If you want to learn how to actually DO a sensual massage from head to toes, there is no better book you can buy than "The New Sensual Massage." The author's sensitivity and love for this wonderful art, comes through on every page. You are taken step by step through every phase of a complete body massage, but the best thing about the book is the way you can use it right away to do a little bit of massage. Then you can add to your small massage as you learn more technique. All the massage strokes are clearly explained and illustrated with terrific photography and many anatomical illustration, which are based on the photos. You really have the feeling that the author is talking to you and guiding you every step of the way. He even tells you how various strokes will feel to your partner. The people in the photos look beautiful. Massage is a great thing to know because it really does work. I realize now that there is no need to hire a pro when you can learn how to do this yourself so easily.

No hype here, this is a book to keep and treasure. This is also a great book to give as a romantic gift, because it shows how much you care about your significant other's pleasures.

I have only recently begun reading about, and practicing, chi gong. I like the practice of chi gong (Qigong) because it is much easier than learning tai chi and just as beneficial.
I have a couple of DVDs which show one how to do basic exercises of chi gong and a couple of books. I am practicing almost daily and noticing little changes in myself, mainly being more aware of my breathing. These DVDS and books ones are a bit simple and did not answer some of the questions that came up for me. So I bought Jahnke's book based on reading a bit of it and all the reviews. After reading the first few pages, I turned to Chapter 15 which contains guidelines for practice. Gone were the "rules" like, repeat certain exercises 9 times or, practice at a certain time of day. These could be important for an intermediate or advanced practitioner but not for a beginner. In the beginning, it is enough to do the best you can with each exercise, try to get the breathing right and keep practicing. And there is no such thing as "no pain, no gain." In fact, he stresses NOT to do anything that is at all painful, even mildly so. He also stresses the great variability and styles of chi gong and that you're not committing a crime by doing an exercise "wrong" or differently than someone else does.
Now that I'm clearer on the basics, I'm reading the rest of the book and am quite happy with the level of detail - it doesn't seem "bloated" as one reviewer put it. I think that if it's not already, this book is destined to be a classic English language introduction to chi, chi gong and tai chi.

I bought this book to learn more in depth information about the qigong class I am taking. I love the way the material is organized! I read this book slowly and underlined many passages. There are some deep truths here. Whether you are trying to decide to start the practice of qigong or are already enjoying it's myriad benefits, this book will increase your understanding of the mysterious qi. There are qigong exercises presented in the book with lovely drawings, but it is still better to find a class or group to fully understand how to perform the movements properly with the breath. The practice of qigong has improved my life, my health, and my energy, exponentially! May you find great benefit, too!

I don't mean to dampen the enthusiasm other readers have shown. This book is a terrific introduction to the theory and idea of qi and its cultivation and uses. The tone is a bit "New Agey" though, with Stuart Smiley-style affirmations at the end of each chapter ("I create, maximize, and sustain an inner reserve of potential to optimize my health, life, and being.") And in covering a wide swath, Jahnke invariably sacrifices depth for breadth. As one reader noted, the Macrocosmic Orbit, widely considered a key to qi cultivation, is given a very cursory description. If you're new to this stuff, this book is a great overview of the subject, but understand that it is really an orientation, not an adequate how-to manual. And there's the danger that in all the warm and cozy prose, one can lose sight of the fact that the Chinese regard qi gong as a discipline requiring exactitude, discipline and dedication. So buy this or read it if you're looking to get oriented in the subject, then buy one of the clear technical manuals available or, better yet, have the supreme good fortune to find a great teacher.

The Practice and Spirit of Qigong/Tai Chi Revealed
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-20
What a great book! Well written and fascinating to read. I liked the poetic quotes from various Qi masters that introduce each chapter. I had read some other books on energy healing (e.g., "Energy Medicine"), but this book was the one that brought home the general concepts about energy healing while presenting a practice that is easy to follow without being technical (I.e, if you are interested in details about meridians and Chakras, you're better off with different book like "Energy Medicine," which to me was overwheming in its details and techniques.).

"The Healing Promise of Qi" emphasizes the importance of body alignment, breath, and mind and breaks the Qigong/Tai Chi practice down into ten steps:

1. Discover Qi
2. Gaher Qi
3. Circulate Qi
4. Purify Qi
5. Direct Qi
6. Conserve Qi
7. Store Qi
8. Transform Qi
9. Dissolve in Qi
10. Transmit Qi

Approximately 1-3 exercises are presented for each step (total 10-15 exercises) to help you develop the Qi flow.

The book then finishes off in the later chapters with an "owner's manual" or guide for your practice and a discussion on the science of Qi (fields of energy, mind and consciousness, etc.).

I have been following the practice, and the exercises have really helped me relax amid the stress of everyday life. The exercises take less than 10 minutes, plus they help me to meditate more easily.

The author's words ring true and sincere, and he has organized his topics well. I believe in his general message that anyone's health would benefit from following the practice of Qigong/Tai Chi.

Very easy to understand and useful to the novice. The book begins with a history of the development of Jin Shin then goes to the quick easily used finger "jumper cabling" and the association of each finger with organs and systems within the body. Only then does the book go into various flows and Safety Energy Locks/points on the body that can be worked and how they can be used.

I bought the book after a practitioner used this technique on me. However, the information provided is too extensive and confusing, listing far too many "points" in the body with corresponding healing touches to keep track of them. The body map listing them is in the first part of the book, so you have to flip back and forth to see what the author is referring to. I also thought some of the miraculous healing claims a little outrageous. The way this system originated is also a little murky. This is a better book for people training to learn this practice than for the lay public.

Andreas Moritz truly does an amazing job of throughly explaining the reasoning and purpose of the liver cleanse in an easily digestible format without being too overwhelming. There is nothing too hard about the cleanse and it really works! The worst part is drinking the epsom salts, but lemon really does a good job of cutting out the flavor and its done so quick. I've done other liver cleanses where I've had to starve for days and I didn't see the results that I've seen with this method. My first time I must have passed over a hundred little stones and some liver parasites!!!!!

My friend, inflicted with Gilbert's syndrome, passed stones about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter his first go!

WOW! We had those things in our bodies!?

I feel great, energized, and my mind is clear. Ever since I've gone raw vegan I've seen a lot of great improvements in my health and mind. Now I've taken it to the next level and am recommending this book to all of my friends and loved ones. Thank you for enlightening us Andreas Moritz!

I was having gallbladder pain, I knew it, (family history of gallbladder removals). I did not want to have my gallbladder removed. Did you know how vital the gallbladder really is? You need to read this book before you get yours removed, be sure to do internet searches on why not to have it removed. Anyway, I had dull pain in my lower right, just under the rib cage for over a year maybe two. It was on and off pain. I also had back pain, neck pain and shoulder pain, on and off for at least 10 years. I never associated my back pain to the gallbladder but I guess that pain was a direct result of my congested liver and gallbladder. I also suffered from occasional heart burn. I also had brain fog, and memory issues. OK, anyway...so I went to see the doctor and I had the two tests to check my gallbladder, the ultra sound showed no stones and the HIDA scan showed a (14%) poor ejection rate of the gallbladder. My doctor suggested I should have it removed. But I refused, and told the surgeon I would be doing more research (being a health nut I usually make sure to study up on things before making these life changing decisions). I did my research and you should too. One important note is that it told me that most of the stones cannot be see by ultrasound, so do not be fooled you still have liver congested with stones that are basically congealed clumps of bile or organic matter (stones which are not calcified and therefore do not show up on scans). The process of the flush softens the gunk and it will widen the bile ducts, so it will expel them out of your liver and gallbladder painlessly. I followed the directions in this book for the liver and gallbladder flush last week and the results were instantaneous and amazing. I passed thousands of stones and gunk! I now have no pain what-so-ever. All back pain is gone, all stomach pain is gone. I truly believe this information has saved my gallbladder. I even have found that I feel calmer and do not get all worked up over stressful events, such as driving in traffic, my stomach is relaxed, and back too...and therefore I oddly enough notice a big difference. It seems to resolve so many other health issues I have had... I had not noticed I was having so many other things that the flush seemed to alleviate, just read the book and you will see. Please get this book you will be so glad you did and if you do the flush it will change your life forever, you will feel 20 years younger! Its so easy to do too, and the process is 100% painless! I am encouraging my entire family to do the flush!
