It's a perfect book if you are a beginner. With this book you will quickly master the basic techniques and stances. Clear step-by-step instructions with a lot of photographs, artworks and tip boxes. Thai bodywork is also known as Thai massage. The techniques and movements in this book are known as the "northern-style", they are practised throughout Thailand in preference to the "southern style", which is known as the "hard style" and is practised mainly in Bangkok.

I've been a sports therapist for 26 years and have bought studied most of the books on sports massage. Pat Archer has done a tremendous job of organizing, explaining, and demonstrating the methods and rationale for sports massage. This is a great book for beginner or advanced massage therapist, but may be too advanced for non-professionals.

An excellent book on touch, emotion and healing

Touch and emotion in manual therapy, by Bevis Nathan, Churchill Livingstone, 1999, £17.95, paperback, 222 pages, illustrated, ISBN 0443056579

In this astonishingly original and thoughtful book, Bevis Nathan, a practising osteopath, studies the therapeutic and psychological meanings of touch. He explores touch as communicative and expressive, and proposes a `more ethical, realistic, empathic, human' approach to manual therapy based on a holistic concept of the body. He opposes the orthodox medical rationale that types of touches are procedures and techniques, based on a concept of the body as essentially mechanical.

He first explores the existential meaning of touch, and its potent effects. Touch is the ground of all our other senses. It is not limited to a single organ: the whole body is the organ of touch. He emphasises the mother's key role in infant development: her touch is "supremely important in influencing the existential, psychological and physical development of the fetus and newborn infant." Touch deprivation leads to poor physical, social and emotional development, failure to thrive and even death. Flesh is both subjective and objective; it is lived, "but it is also of the earth and therefore willingly succumbs to a certain degree of material analysis."

He then explores what happens when the manual therapist touches the patient. He asks us to "realise the extent to which my body reliably reflects my attempts to integrate my environment, my relationships, my thoughts and feelings." Mind and body form a unity; psychology is indissolubly intertwined with physiology. He shows how over-emphasising either element of this unity leads to a polarised duality, of a disembodied psychotherapy and a mindless body therapy.

Touch contains the potential for the most powerful blend of physical and emotional healing processes; manual therapists can help to resolve psychologically and emotionally generated bodily disorders. He concludes that shattering the belief that manual therapy is only a mechano-physiological discipline opens up extraordinarily creative possibilities. This book presents a powerful and well-grounded rationale for osteopathy, but it should also prove most valuable to all who use manual therapy to care for people.

The basic and most important research in the field of touch is being done by Tiffany Field at the Touch Research Institutes. This book is a review of that research through the year 1999. It is a great resource for those in the field and those who want to be in the field of touch therapy.

With this volume, Dr. G. Liu brings together a wealth of clinical experience and understanding. His approach to an important, yet often under-exlpored subject is cohesive, well integrated and quite accessible to its readers, and as such, fills a long empty gap in the English language volumes on Traditional Chinese Medicine.

As the title states, this is truly a "clinical guide". It not only provides a thorough discussion of the history and concept (including etiology, differentiation, and treatment)of "warm diseases", but goes on to bring the material to life with numerous clinical examples. The examples provide anchors for the various aspects of warm diseases that each represents, and then take the reader through the process of developing a rational treatment approach based on the understanding of that particular condition.

Dr. Liu's extensive knowledge of Chinese Herbal Medicine is also quite evident as he discusses the various herbal approaches to treatment of different warm diseases. Despite the complexity of Chinese Herbal Medicine, Dr. Liu presents this information in a style which is, at the same time, informative and accessible to the reader. He provides the reader with information on both individual herbs, as well as specific formulas. Thus, he helps the reader on the path to working to understand and adjust formulas, based on the specific, individual needs of their patients.

His integration of theory, and diagnostic understanding, with treatment implementation makes this volume invaluable to both students and practioners alike. I strongly recommend this as a book to keep on your shelf, as it is one to which you will frequently return. I believe that we owe Dr. Liu a debt of gratitude for sharing himself, his knowledge, and his clinical experiences with us in his gift of "Warm Diseases: A Clinical Guide".

What People Say About Acupuncture

This book contains newspaper clippings from the mid 1970s along with some personal testimonies and various bills in front of the California State legislature at that time to allow acupuncture to be accepted as a valid medical treatment. Also included is an explanation of simple acupuncture treatments. Here is an excerpt from book's Introduction:

"The purpose of this book is to let people understand acupuncture in their own language. Many testimonials printed here are true stories and can be inspected if need be. There is not one story here manufactures by imagination. Since acupuncture was only imported to the United States a few years ago [circa 1976], many people are still doubtful about it's effectiveness. Many people, as well as professionals, are deadly set against it. Though there are some M. D.'s who gave up western medicine and dealt with acupuncture exclusively... There good Gov. Brown Jr. signed SB 86 into law. The law is not perfect though, but it will not permit the judges to put acupuncturists in jail. We believe this is a milestone for those non-physician acupuncturists."
