From Quackery to Therapy: Acupuncture as Mainstream MedicineReview Date: 2000-06-24
The most important point (pun intended) made by the authors is that there is now strong scientific evidence that acupuncture is clinically effective in treating many types of chronic pain, with more limited efficacy in the treatment of other diseases. As distinguished medical scientists (Sung J. Liao, M.D., now retired, was a senior member of the faculty at Yale Medical School for many years, as well as Clinical Professor of Surgical Sciences at New York University College of Dentistry and a Senior Fellow of the American Academy of Physicians, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and the Royal Academy of Medicine (United Kingdom), Mathew H.M. Lee, M.D., Medical Director of the Howard A. Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at New York University School of Medicine, Clinical Professor of Surgical Sciences at New York University College of Dentistry, a Fellow of the American Academy of Physicians, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the American Public Health Association, and the American College of Preventive Medicine, among others, and Lorenz K. Y. Ng, M.D., Medical Director of the Chronic Pain Program at the National Rehabilitation Hospital, Washington, D.C. and Assistant Clinical Professor of Neurology at the George Washington University hospital, Washington, D.C.) applying conventional scientific methods in their analysis, they are quick to concede that acupuncture is not the "magic bullet" cure-all claimed for it by many quack practitioners of alternative medicine.
Nonetheless, based upon decades of experience and evaluation of the scientific evidence, they "believe strongly that acupuncture and, for that matter, traditional Chinese medicine are not alternatives to, or substitutes for, the mainstream allopathic medicine. . ." but rather, "complementary" to mainstream medical treatments.
In other words, despite the exaggerated claims made for it by quacks (which injure the discipline by discrediting it), acupuncture has real utility in the treatment of chronic pain, and may be useful for certain other ailments, as carefully documented and described, category by category, in the book itself.
If you're a serious student of acupuncture as complementary medicine, then buy this book. If you're a quack, then give it up-- you've been exposed.
And if you're neither of the above, then marvel that these three medical pioneers, their life's work now validated by the American Medical Association, have devoted careers to pulling an ancient healing tradition, mired in myths, superstition, and inflated claims, into the bright light of scientific inquiry and skepticism. The "slimmed down" version of scientifically validated acupuncture should help generations of patients and pain sufferers to come.

Protection & Survival with ourselvesReview Date: 2006-09-12
"The Psychological Immune System" was written to educate us on how the psychological immune system ties into the biological immune system. The author takes his theories beyond the individual's functioning system and applies it to larger groups and organizations. Dr. Kagan extensively researched this topic and is well referenced. He also uses personal anecdotes to illustrate some of his points. This makes the information more interesting and the concepts easier to grasp.
If we have a healthy functioning psychological immune system, we are able to use our emotions to guide us into making good decisions. Dr. Kagan states, "It seems we comprehend life's events through their emotional impact on us, and our emotions act as
warning signals for the dangers we encounter." Therefore, it is important that we maintain a healthy functioning system. As with our biological system, which functions to keep us alive, we need both systems to be healthy and for our survival. When our biological systems start failing, we get diseases and end up either in poor health or dead. When our psychological immune systems are not functioning properly we can make poor choices that are detrimental to our survival.
"The Psychological Immune System" is incredibly interesting and informative to read. Dr. Kagan includes a lot of anthropological information to show us how we evolved in this manner. He mentions historical events and cultures that are influenced by his theories. He also discusses how other creatures in the animal world are also guided by this system. While the information presented is informative enough to be used as textbook material, it is written in such a way that a non-student would enjoy reading the material for personal growth and to gain a better understanding of themselves, others, and different societies.
I highly recommend this book to people who are interested in self-growth, anthropology students, parents, and teachers. It is definitely well worth reading. The information gained can be useful for improving yourself, or for understanding how to guide others.

Excellent learning toolReview Date: 2005-04-28
It was easy to navigate and all the illustrations and pictures are very professional. Especially the anatomical illustraions of the acupoints help me to memorize the point location easily.
I have never seen the acupuncture program better than this.
I would say " you are the best". If this program had more function such as "edit the text" function, it would be better.
But anyway, I recommended this program to my acupoint class instructor Dr Yu and she began to use in the classroom.
All the classmates were very happy with it. I think the instructors should use this program for visual and effective teaching.

Most people think shiatsu is some form of massage and as such is all about the physical touch. They can't be further from the truth, as this book vividly explains shiatsu is all about the Tao heart, without which no treatment can occur. This book tackles this highly abstract subject of Tao heart and the world of Ki in a very simple language with many vivid stories based on the personal experience of the author.
Any Shiatsu enthusiast or even a person with some interest in eastern medicine MUST own both books. It is also highly recommended to those in search of the real spiritual work done by great masters at the far east.
On a side note the author (and some teachers trained by him) teach workshops all over the world. While reading this book can be a very powerful experience, it is not even close to attending one of these workshops and receiving the Tao Heart directly from the teacher - a very important element in teachings from the far east. For more information refer to the tao shiatsu website at http://www.taoshiatsu.com
