Excellent text on Chinese bodywork!!!

This is one of the best texts written in English that I have seen on the subject of Chinese bodywork. In the first few chapters the basics of Chinese medicine and diagnosis are reviewed with an emphasis on diagnosis for treatment with Tuina, or Chinese medical massage. There is also a very interesting section on using herbs and linaments as massage mediums. The next chapters deal in depth with individual and compound hand maneuvers and even contains traditional Chinese style "chiropractic" maneuvers. The last section of the book gives an in-depth discussion of specific conditions from TCM internal medicine, gynecology, traumatology and other specialties.

A must read for all practitioners and students of Chinese medicine!!!

You kind of need to know something about TCM theory in order to use this book. I found this to be an awesome text. You can look up almost any condition and it will tell you the etiology, s/sx, massage protocol, and suggested herbal perscription. recommend it.

Wordy but a good introduction

As a Tui Na practitioner and healer, I find this book to be accurate and easy to navigate through. It's more of a beginner's book. There's a lot of theory and history, which I don't mind at this point, but don't need.
However, you will find helpful techniques and key points to remember when you're doing bodywork.
I've never seen a Tui Na book that kept me enthused. It has to come from a passion for the art and the experience of the power of Tui Na over western massage. Honestly, Tui Na massage can do what Swedish and Relaxation massage can do in 1/4 of the time, don't take my word for it. Go to a genuine TCM doctor and get bodywork. The science of meridians is well beyond the science of blood, nerve and tissue used in most clinics.
You'll believe it when you feel it.
Then you can read this book the whole way through.
Bless

Chinese Tui Na Massage: The Essential Guide To Treating Injuries, Improving Health & Balancing Qi is a straightforward teaching guide by Xiangcai Xu to the ancient art of Tui Na massage. An excellent, technically detailed reference, Chinese Tui Na Massa introduces an eastern physical therapy, which is a preventive health care regime utilizing acupoints, common Tui Na manipulations, and the practice of using Tui Na to treat a wide spectrum of diseases and conditions ranging from colds and headaches, to carpal tunnel syndrome and acute lumbar sprain. Chinese Tui Na Massage is a highly recommended addition to Eastern Medicine and Martial Arts reference collections and reading lists.

If you want to know about chinese medicine, this is the book you need. This is not necessarily a pocket guide, but it is very comprehensive and complete. You may need to get simpler texts to break down individual topics, but this is the book you need in your library!

This book is a great way to get introduced to Chinese medicine. It's able to cover a lot of ground yet not being too vague or general. Usually books like this tend to be too techincal, but I found it surprisingly accessible. Definitely a great starting place if you want to learn about chinese medicine.

Well written, interesting lay out, packed with facts on the migration of Chinese methods to Japan and the evolution of current methods. Photography is beautiful. Text is easy to read and understand. Hand in hand they show clearly: how it works, why it works and how to do it. A must for anyone considering learning this form of massage therapy for themselves and others.

Comprehensive yet delightfully comprehensible

Elaine Liechti has done a wonderful job of sharing her passion and knowledge of shiatsu. This book is a complete, concise, yet easy-to-understand introduction to shiatsu; what it is, the history, the different schools of shiatsu, the basic principles, and how to do it. The book is well structured and has lots of diagrams, photos and illustrations to capture your interest. This book is certainly the most comprehensive and comprehensible book on shiatsu I have seen. Apart from one dismissive comment on acupuncture, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in shiatsu.

A Most Helpful Guide
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-31
What a relief to find an authoritative book that describes the practice of Chinese medicine in English-speaking countries and also describes the theory and terminology that underlie its practice. Claire Cassidy, the editor and a contributor, has done a first-rate job in preparing this book for medical practitioners and others who seek understanding. It is part of a series of Medical Guides to Complementary and Alternative Methods edited by Marc Micozzi, MD, who works with an impressive editorial board of physicians.
Chinese medicine is an immense topic whose long history has resulted in multiple theories and multiple terminologies. With its model for health and the body's functioning based on energy or Qi (Chi), Chinese medicine can seem confusing and even mystical to those of us schooled in the west. What a delight to find a highly readable and also scholarly guide to its theory and practice. How helpful also to see how acupuncture fits within the general paradigm for Chinese medicine and to be able to gain some understanding of this paradigm. Chinese approaches to health, with their focus on the person and not just a disease, stand in contrast to the increasing specialization in western medical practice. I liked learning about acupuncture in a context of related practices in Chinese medicine like herbal remedies, diet, body work, and Qi gong.
As a scientist who majored in biology, I remember my confusion when my wife came back from an acupuncture session talking about meridians and energy balancing. Here she was feeling well treated and much helped with her headaches, and yet I had no idea about what had gone on or why. I also was fascinated that an effective means of healing could be based on such a different view of our bodies and how they work. I felt the challenge of having to re-imagine the body and how it heals, but I did not know where to go for helpful descriptions and explanations. Now I find that I have an excellent solution with Claire Cassidy's edited volume on Contemporary Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture.
I also serve as a board member of a cancer support center in Rhode Island and know how helpful those living with cancer can find complementary methods when dealing with discomfort and exhaustion from either the disease or chemotherapy and radiation treatments. I know also of the skepticism that some doctors and nurses can have about these complementary methods. So I am glad for such an authoritative book that will help them gain understanding and be able to make referrals. The book contains much information based on practice, and it describes research into the effectiveness of Chinese medical procedures. It is well organized and carefully edited to provide broad coverage and clear descriptions. With expanding availability of trained professionals in Chinese medicine, Cassidy's well-edited book provides a timely guide to what that they have to offer.

A Precious and Useful Jewel

Dr. Claire Cassidy's new book is a true jewel. It is a rich collection of writings on specific topics by some of the most distinguished practitioners, researchers, and authors in the field, including Peter Eckman, Richard Hammerschlag, Jane Grissmer, Stephen Birch, and Lonny Jarrett.

I enjoyed every moment of reading the book. Though it is written with the practitioner of Western medicine in mind, as an acupuncturist I found it to contain a wealth of interesting and useful information. It has become one of my principal reference sources when I prepare presentations on acupuncture for technical and non-technical audiences alike. I highly recommend this book.

The book is written so anyone can understand and use the information on a daily basis. It provides valuable information on prevention, healing yourself, and has helpful ideas. The pictures are clear and the directions are very easy to follow step by step. You can learn the important pressure points quickly.
I have used the tehniques to travel 22 hours on a plane and did not get air sick, swollen limbs, or suffer from jet lag just from using a few pressure points and following the helpful hints.
The herbal and aroma therapy is also very helpful for relaxation and improving health. I highly recommend this book to anyone!

I have a busy, successful private practice as a licensed massage therapist, thanks a lot to the techniques shared in Mr. Ohashi's book. I graduated from Ohashi Institute a long time ago, used the techniques, then moved to Hawai'i and learned lomilomi massage and lately studied rolfing, orthopedic massage, craniosacral therapy, trigger point therapy, etc. It seemed like shiatsu techniques were not enough, because I had to work with injuries, pain, and other soft tissue problems. But ....

What can I say except that what Mr. Ohashi shares works! It works very well. After studying "deep tissue massage" from leading western experts, I learned to use Ohashi's techniques not only with meridians in mind, but also with muscles, trigger points, etc. in mind. It works!!!

Many techniques in his book are actually myofascial release, combined with rather low-key thai massage stretches and other kind of stretches. Many shiatsu points are in areas that are likely to have trigger points and/or get stuck. For example, the last point on the kidney meridian is where the first rib attaches to the sternum, so it is used for people with tight shoulders and neck due to stress. If you go to a chiropractor, they will punch you into that spot with the intent to release the first rib. A shiatsu person will press there to balance your kidney meridian. Ohashi shows you the stretch that will make pressing into that point very effective and easy.

I feel so extremely grateful to have had the privilege of studying with Mr. Ohashi. He teaches proper body mechanics and movement, and that helps so much when you have to do many treatments per day. I feel good after working.

Overall, I highly recommend this book, and I do hope you enjoy it. If you can, take a class with Ohashi, he teaches at Omega institute and many other places.

East Meets West Healing

Good start to understand Eastern and Western medicine.
5 stars for his background layout of those.
However, he fails to do indexing at the end of the books.
Such as page 17, when he refers to Robert Becker, "The Body Electric".
no appendix, no index, no suggested reading whatsoever.
I hope his next edition of this book will include those to
become more professional readings.

As you many know, there are many QI Gong masters in this planet,
some are faked , some are hunting for money, BUT some are real!!
For more information about Qi theory and history, I guess those below books are good reference.
Encounter With Qi, by Eisenberg
Healing Promise of Qi, by Roger

For me, the real Qi-gong master who still living now is Lin Hou-Sheng, in Shanghai ,China.
He himself is a chinese medicine doctor who proves lots of his works in scientific terms.
His Tai Ji Qi Gong 18 movements of Lin Hou-Sheng is also great!!
his English translated books "300 questions on Qigong" is excellent.
You can try to do those exercises to get in touch with QI
it's real but can not be explained with simple vocabulary.

Don't believe in anything about "Qi" , until you touch it with
your own feeling!!

This book has inspired me!
