This was the first book I picked up to find out more about Acupressure and I found it to be very helpful and convincing. It was easy to understand and start practicing on myself. The techniques worked and were easy to remember. It definately piqued my interest to find out more on the topic. I would recommend it for those who are new to acupressure.

The accupuncture/accupressure system of self-healing is millenia-old, and I was looking for a book that would serve as a quick how-to rather than a lengthy thesis. I compared this book to the Michael Reed Gach book which seems very popular, and I have to say that this book works much better. It is brief, and yet leaves very little out. The format is well-suited for someone who just wants to get started, rather than be reading a textbook for the next few hours before getting started.

This book is one of the most excellent texts of it's kind. While providing sound and applicable information for the professional, it also is infinately readable for self help. Dr. Cross is amazingly generous with his information. His writing style in interesting and clear. As someone who has studied a wide range of alternative medical practices, I really appreciate Dr. Cross's ability to boil down huge amounts of information into very practical and usable applications. All of his books are a must for someone seriously interested in bringing the maximum to their health care practice.

Excellent presentation of Acupressure and the practical applications associated with Acupressure. Emphasis placed on how the art relates to Western medicine. Information is presented in a clear, concise, easy-to-understand manner that covers everything from the basics to advanced techniques used by the "masters". Highly useful and recommended as a resource for those involved in the allied health professions or the lay-person with an interest in Acupressure.

This brilliant text provides a "fly-on-the-wall" view of what it must be like to work in a TCM clinic overseas. From the History through diagnosis and treatment options it presents an accurate and concise account of patient care and the Shen of healing. This is a professional text, written in clear clinical shorthand and a must for your library.

Buy this book, if for no other reason that the treatment protocol for "Flu Like Symptoms" (#5). You will use that methodology to help people from now on.

The Churchill Livingstone edition is bound more stoutly than most Chinese texts, but will require loving preservation - because it WILL be used - if it is to last you a lifetime!

Excellent exposure to difficult cases

This text really exposes you to a variety of difficult cases from China. It shows you the true power of acupuncture as a form a medicine with its ability to heal patients that are often in critical condition. Not only does it give you the point selections that were used to treat the patients, it also gives you the reasoning behind the selection and sometimes the needling techniques that were used. I highly recommend it because for me, it filled in a lot of missing pieces of the clinical puzzle, especially in the area of why certain points are chosen and how they should be needled in order to get the desired effect.

Exactly what I was looking for

Review Date: 2008-09-18
I bought a number of acupuncture books to learn a little bit more about the treatments I am getting. I really wanted to know the general history of the subject and how it works and why. This was definitely the best book out of the six I looked at! There were some other good ones, but they were too involved and much more suited to someone studying the practice. Some were just too elementary or dummed down. This presented a very intelligent and interesting historical review and then taught you the basics of the body's systems, meridians, points, and gave examples of how certain diseases, ailments, injuries are treated. Not all encompassing, but just the exact amount of information that I wanted and needed. I would recommend it to anyone considering acupuncture or anyone who just wants to have a better understanding of it. It's a pretty quick read that I did in a matter of a few nights.

This is phenomenal book!

Great book, great info and I will definitely be going to an acupuncturist after reading this.I have since making this reveiw been to one twice. OMG it was incredible. No sinus pressure or headaches for EIGHT MONTHS before I had to go back. It sure beats poppin allergy pills etc. and less expensive and more healthy in the long run. Downside is it is a little expensive but less than what all med and docs and missed work add up to!! My first visit was 100 bucks and 75.00 each visit thereafter, not bad consider how freakin awesome it made me feel and how long it lasted.

Healing as Homecoming

Reading this work is like reading good poetry--vivid, precise, with an economy of words and a wealth of images that bring the reader into a living conversation with the author. The book is about relationships which is are essence of healing--between patient and practitioner, between individual and symptoms, between the sacred and the mundane, and between the spirit and the body. In an era of new age "presto-change-o" approaches to holistic healing, it is refreshing to encounter a writer with such depth of knowledge and soulful expression. I recommend it to my patients often.

Dianne Connelly has written a book that is informative, enlightening, and soothing to the soul. Through the seamless, almost poetic flow of her words, she conveys a profound and tender respect for the reader that in itself is a healing meditation. Acupuncture is Connelly's particular discipline, but anyone interested in bio-psycho-spiritual healing will draw great comfort from this work. She calls us back again and again to the fact that it is relationship that eases all of our ailments, and it is connection--person to person, ego to Self, psyche to body--that creates wholeness. I re-read All Sickness is Homesickness whenever I need a gentle reminder of the sacredness of my own healing vocation, and I recommend it frequently to my patients.

This book looks very professionally done, but the content is less than adequate. There are location mistakes on the diagrams, and the information on the individual points is too condensed for any real practical use.

Excellent!

This book is excellent, which makes me wonder what the heck the last reviewer was thinking. This book doesn't have point location errors...I am a certified acupuncturist and I can assure you this book is not only accurate, but Bruce Pomeranz uses Western methods to validate the use of acupuncture in the mainstream. Many people don't like his "anatomical" method of relating the acu-points, but for Western trained health care professionals, it is much easier to integrate into practice, sell to patients and to explain using science than the traditional Chinese medicine. Let's face it, the Chinese knew what they were talking about 2000 years ago (or more!) but they explained it in a way that made sense to them. Well, we're a bit more scientific now and explaining the results we get with a bit of science may offend some, but it is progress because we are integrating old style wisdom with new understandings.

I have no medical background or plans for a medical career, but I love
and value this book. I use it as a constant reference and am also reading
it in its entirety, as it is alive, real and straightforward. Dr. Robinson's personal
anecdotes from his vast experience add much to his explanations and make
the complicated world of medicine much easier to understand. He obviously
has taken great care in his presentation and put much thought into writing
this concise and well-organized textbook, one that I also believe can serve
as a lay person's general medical reference.

BIOMEDICINE is an informative text written in an easy to understand style by an insightful former surgeon. When I want an encapsulation of Western medicine's take regarding a patient's health condition, this is the first book to which I turn. I have on occasion sent a grateful patient home with an excerpt from BIOMEDICINE because it so clearly describes their medical diagnosis in language anyone can comprehend. I've even recommended that my TCM alma mater consider adopting this textbook for their Western Medicine classes. This book has elevated my professional standard by allowing me to collaborate intelligently with MD's. Dr. Robinson knows how "both sides" think - he is uniquely qualified to write about truly integrated medicine.

This book is used by my massage school as a support in the teaching of shiatsu. I found it extremely useful and helpful for someone who started learning about shiatsu. The book really goes into details about the origins and objectives of shiatsu, as well as the TCM (traditionnal chinese medicine). Half of the book focuses on theory (yin/yang, five elements, the meridians, the organs, the body fluids, the acupoints, then TCM...)the other half focuses on a shiatsu routine design for a first degree shiatsu treatment. I read it three times already. There is a lot to assimilate. Hopefully Mr Dubitsky will write a volume two and a volume three soon...

Hi, this book is wonderful! Written with the intent of combining the educational text book information but including pictures, diagrams and language that would enable one with no formal experience learn some shiatsu massage skills. I am working towards my massage therapy license and this book is a gem. I unfortunately bought this book from a store a and am kicking my-self for not going through Amazon.com, because I would have saved money. Oh well live and learn... ;-)

Review Date: 2007-04-01
I haven't had time to read the whole book of course but reading through a few pages here and there I find it extremely informative. I once read a negative criticism about the author but ofcourse everyone is entitled to there opinion. In my case I find this book very informative. I've been looking for a book that goes into more detail about the Eight Xtra-ordinary vessels and this book is it. Ofcourse I will continue my search on the uses because most successful practioners I have met stress the impotance of this understanding.

If you're a professional acupuncturist buy this.

This book answers countless questions I had while in school, demystifies how acupoints create their effects and has improved my treatment design hugely. After reading the Table of Contents and sampling sections of the book I decided to read it from cover to cover. I know its expensive but its a lot cheaper than a single 3 semester hour course and contains the knowledge of several courses.
