Reading aloud to your children opens their eyes to new worlds. Even, in this case, to unknown worlds right next door. How does life look through the eyes of a bright young African-American woman, raised in a junkyard of broken hopes and frustrated dremas? How did the lessons in integrity learned in that environment carry her to a position of high visibility in the White House? How do you deal with the unintentional slights thoughtlessly handed out by the dominant culture, while yet retaining your own sweetness of spirit?

This book is a excellent source of help for people experiencing the subjects dealt with including date rape, abortion, sexual harassment, and single parenting. It is a moving emotional journey through one woman's life. It shows the strength of a woman in many situations. The poetry is intense and expressive in a unique way with a variety of style and rhythm. I feel this is a must read for all women. It would be an education for most men about what harm their actions can do, and a strong message to them about how a woman can refuse to let it defeat her. Moving intense rollcoaster ride.

This book should be required reading of all freshman girls during their first year of college. The book explores how easily date rape can occur and the aftermath that follows. The book would also be very helpful to anyone who has experienced date rape as well. It can help begin the process of healing.

Once in a green room is a wonderfully written book. Keri Baker eloquently shows us the poignant reality of rape and the struggle of dealing with the guilt that follows. This is a must-read book for everyone. Even if you are not a victim of sexual abuse, you probably know someone who is and you just don't realize it.

Don't let the title fool you: this book did not become obsolete in 1980. Noonan provides a primer in Constitutional law as it applies to abortion in America. More recent cases have only built on their predecessors, so by all means read this important book.

I found this book in a box full of old books while staying at a friend's house ten years ago. It didn't seem like the kind of book you curl up with, but that is just what I ended up doing. The book was written in 1979, but it illuminates things that are going on even now and explains the legal background and elite cultural attitudes behind them. It also clears up a lot of misconceptions and outright falsehoods that are passed along "Telephone-Game"-style, by the media.

The tone of the book is fair, reasonable, measured and even scholarly. Noonan is no Ann Coulter or James Carville.

I was pro-choice 10 years ago. I am now pro-life, and John Noonan's book had a lot to do with that change. Don't read it if you don't like having your positions challenged.

Dynamic recap of the past century

I had the honor of taking a leadership class with Sarah Weddington where this book was used as a main text. The story of this accomplished woman bears testament to the changes fought for and won by women in the second wave of feminsim, both in the state of Texas and in the Nation.

Prior to reading this book, I knew that Roe vs. Wade originated in Texas, but I never actually understood how much things changed for women of my generation. Both women and men alike will marvel at the antiquated norms Weddington faced as a young woman and how she ultimately overcame them. For all of the frustrations I presently voice about the status of women in the world, I am not at all certain I would have her personal courage when faced with such overwhelming sexism.

As a Texas state legislator, she was responsible for an equal credit act, a rape reform bill (co-sponsored with another new female representative named Kathryn Bailey) and the state's Equal Rights Amendment. To realize that one woman had accomplished all of this is simply amazing and inspiring.

Although there is not as much White House era musings as I would have prefered, the fact that she got in when few presidents of either party appointed large numbers of women is really signifigant. Not satified with her own personal triumph, she then worked to ensure that future generations would not have the same hardship. Working alongside Midge Constanoza, Weddington used her position to encourage more women to get involved in policymaking.

Also heartening is Weddington's inclusion of steps to protect reproductive choice at the book's end.Unlike some other books on reproductive rights, the message comes in loud and clear: Defend choice every day and without compromise. The battles may be long and weary, but the nation cannot afford to abandon the 30 year old (at least in spirit) promise of women's bodily autonomy.

Even though the original version of the book was released during the 1992 elections, it is a message that bears repeating in every presidential campaign. Vote pro-choice and vote often to protect women's right to life.

Important lessons on leadership for both women and men

This outstanding book offers an excellent perspective into the life of one of America's most important female attorneys. Regardless of one's political views on abortion, "pro-life" and "pro-choice" advocates alike can agree that Sara Weddington's critical role in this monumental turning point in U.S. abortion rights history serves as an important lesson on the development and evolution of leadership roles for, and the civil rights of, women. This book is for men just as much as it is for women. Men will gain an invaluable insight into their counterparts by adding significantly to their understanding of women. This book is a "must read" for any person of any political persuasion who wishes to add to their comprehension of the question of abortion, the rights of women, and the evolution of the leadership roles assumed by women.

Not just about Roe vs. Wade

Weddington's piece is not just about the culmination of Roe vs. Wade and beyond, but a heartfelt autobiography that helps readers understand and appreciate the challenges of women in the that time period. Readers can gain leadership secrets from the experiences of Weddington from Roe to her work in the White House.

As a young woman, it helped me understand how far women have come in the past century and be more thankful of women leaders, like Sarah Weddington.

I had this book for over a year before I read it. When I finally DID read it I was blown away! The journey to healing from a past abortion is such a difficult one, but this study is like being wrapped in a soft, warm comforter. Sheila Harper has written this study with compassion, honesty, and personal vulnerability. Each chapter gently leads the reader through the healing process with tenderness, truth and hope.

If you or someone you know has been wounded by an abortion or continues to struggle with a past abortion experience, buy this book. Use it yourself or give it to your loved one with a hug and the assurance that you want God's best for them. It will be one of the best things you ever do.

A look behind the myths and legends, Lee's groundbreaking book relied on extensive interviews with the women who sought and obtained abortions -- legal, illegal, quasi-legal, and self-induced -- in the days before legalization. Lee examines the factors that led women to choose abortion, the means by which they found an abortionist, and their attitudes toward their experiences. This book is a must read for prochoice and prolife alike.

Reading "Soul Crisis" is like reading a diary -- which in fact it is. Thought provoking, intimate, and a must read for prolife and prochoice alike.

Abortion's aftermath described as expressed by a wounded heart

Review Date: 2005-11-18
Sue Nathanson's description of the heart-wrenching effect of abortion is the cry of a wounded soul. She chose the abortion to preserve her marriage and family as it was before her fourth pregnancy happened by accident. The decision was essentially one of convenience, when boiled down to bare facts. Her pain and suffering were unexpected because no one prepared her for the result that killing her child would have. The feminist movement that fought so vociferously to give her the right to dispose of her child did not prepare her, nor did anyone try. Had abortion on demand not been available, today she would be rocking grandchildren born to her fourth child. During these long, bloody thirty years since Ms. Nathanson's trauma and the resulting book, only the pro-life movement has paid attention to that reality. When I counsel with women who are post-abortive, I'll use this book to help these suffering women understand that they're not alone. I just wish she'd had a crisis pregnancy center to turn to when she was in so much pain. As a post-abortive woman, I've suffered that pain, too. I turned to God and my Christian faith for healing. I wonder where she is now and if her marriage survived her husband's betrayal of their fourth child.

It's humorous seeing folks who didn't catch that in fact the book is a parody of the "pro-life" movement. It's brilliant, catching the insanity of the pro-war, pro-death penalty, pro-ritual-cannibalism aspects of the Christian right in the form a children's book. Brilliant!

This is a wonderful cartoon book for children. It is gleaned from the illustrator's weekly cartoon strips which appear in the National Catholic Register. I gave it to my then-five-year-old son for Christmas and he was overjoyed.

I would caution parents that the pro-life message is strong in this book, and I recommend previewing it for appropriateness for your own children.

This cartoonist has a way with words and pictures. I bought this cartoon book for my kids because they love Family Circle and other good cartoons. When it came in the mail, I opened it to check through it to see if I could give it to my younger ones. I started reading and read straight through, I couldn't put it down! There's humor, sophistication, a uncanny ability to speak a pro-life message through the eyes of an unborn baby. I recommend it. Have one around the house so friends and family can read it. Or better yet, what a great gift idea that's subtle, yet mind-opening. It's a teaching tool, and entertaining at the same time.

this book is absolutely wonderful, and i am so glad to have added it to my library. its incredibly educational, and really no woman should live without it. i highly recommend it, especially if you are a woman seeking advice concerning menstruation, pregnancy and the like. this book will certainly be a life long reference for me, especially seeing how our reproductive rights as women are continuously put on the stand. this book gives me hope, and lets me know that there are in fact options outside of a coathanger, and the legal process, that are safe and effective.

Even though some of the information will now be dated, the book is excellent and I can't recommend strongly enough that every pro-choice (pro-child, pro-family; they are all the same thing) woman own this book. It documents very clearly the history of abortion and abortion laws and techniques. It describes procedures clearly; a must for anyone facing the current misinformation both sides of the abortion fight are often guilty of. It also has invaluable information on menstrual extraction. The book clearly cites tragic instances of women desperate for legal, safe abortion who have killed themselves trying unsafe "folk" methods. It makes clear that we want our daughters to choose between better options in the future, rather than face a frightening return to the past. The book is well-written, well-organized, and does not carry a proselytising flavour in any way. It is very objective in tone, which I appreciate, without being too technical, medical, or dry. It is also clearly footnoted and every source checks out.

Excellent analysis of the evolution of abortion policy.

James Mohr's "Abortion in America" is a breath of fresh air in the abortion debate. Scholarly, unbiased, and betraying no hint whatsoever of any kind of agenda -- pro or con -- regarding abortion policy, the book is nevertheless revelatory concerning the development of abortion law in this country. From the colonial and early republican period, when abortion was perfectly legal (partly because doctors, hampered by inadequate medical knowledge, -- the difference between a pregnancy and some kind of uterine "stoppage" was unclear -- frequently administered medications that caused abortions) to the 1890s, when virtually every state had a system of laws prohibiting abortions, the story is capably told. And the truth ought to startle anyone who thinks religious activism was in any way responsible for the late 19th-century wave of anti-abortion legislation. I'll leave it to prospective readers to discover who or what was actually responsible, and how self-interest (as opposed to an interest in the unborn) played a crucial role. An eye-opener, and an important read for people for either side of the debate.

Required Reading for Those Interested in the Issue

Review Date: 2000-06-22
Mohr's groundbreaking work is a history of abortion in the United States from the colonial days until the present (as of the late 1970s). What is fascinating about this book is how the medical establishment railed against the increased use of abortion in the 1800s but became among its foremost advocates a century later. Mohr also shows the reader how legalizing abortion in recent years was not a result of lax morals but rather was a return to the past.

This is a brief book, but it is one of the very finest books on this controversial issue.
