Best audiobook for all AD/HD students and adults - Why I Prefer It., September 19, 2008

Review Date: 2008-09-19

I bought the audiobook after getting the paperback. I found it's not just the perfect complement, but even better for covering many topics because I could listen while driving, on my way to class, or in the background at home while doing other things. Since I'm easily distracted myself, the chimes helped keep my focus on the book, and though I love the paperback and the layout (super-easy to read) the audiobook made it even easier to follow...and I think there's even a little info in the audiobook (particularly around meds and alternative solutions...at least that's what I've seen so far, that's not even in the paperback...and yeah, at 13 hours, thankfully broken up into searchable, bite-sized sections, it's definitely UNABRIDGED...but with great info!)

It's rare that a book (or audiobook) comes along that touches your heart while helping you relate to specific problems.

College Confidence with ADD is one such book. Written from the heart, Michael Sandler doesn't preach, but instead shares with you the hurdles involved in succeeding with ADHD, or any learning disability for that matter, how he personally overcame his challenges, and ways you too can succeed.

It's really two books in one...the first, a personal account of overcoming challenges, succeeding with a 'disability', and as Michael puts it, and shares through his own story, turning 'challenges into opportunities'. It's a beautiful book written from the heart sharing his touching stories.

The second book is a how-to guide on overcoming almost every challenge imaginable, and succeeding in school or in life today. Others I've shown this book would say it's a how-to guide for anyone in this modern, hectic, crazy-world. But it's definitely a how-to guide for anyone that think's outside the box, doesn't go from point A to point B in a straight line, or is labeled with AD/HD, Asbergers, Dyslexia, or any other 'learning disability'.

Michael helps readers quickly find the information they, or I am looking for, so that you can get back on track quickly. If you're struggling for a test, the info's in there...need to get organized, it's in there, struggling with relationships in school or beyond, it's in there too.

If you struggle to read, don't have the attention to read, have a reading disability or just prefer audiobooks, then I'd get the audiobook first...or get both, and keep the paperback as a great quick-reference guide, always at the ready. (Or let the parents keep the paperback, and put the audio-version on your iPod or other Mp3 player).

If you're looking for one book or audiobook to overcome challenges, see how others have done it, and figure out how to succeed, this book is worth a try!!!

Wow!

Useful and informative! Love how things are broken up into sections...No matter what information I was looking for, I could find it fast!

Way more information than I ever thought would be in an ADD book, audiobook or otherwise.

I can't say enough about how terrific and unique this audio book is not only for teens going off to college, in college, post grads... but for ANYONE with ADD or ADHD!! This book is explained in a format where the author shares his stories and then details what he has learned from his experiences, in order to help others. He has ADHD himself and is even a life coach for other ADDers now. This audio book is like having an ADD coach by your side all the time. You can use it as a guide and listen to various sections when necessary or you can listen to it fully over and over again. The author's writing is captivating, lighthearted and even humorous at times. He even laughs at his own mistakes sometimes, which truly helps readers see life as a bigger picture than just a current struggle they may be going through at the time. He explains the many creative gifts of having ADD and broaches just about every life topic with great knowledge. His sections range from the best foods for an ADDer to eat to stay focused, to sections on how college students with ADD can keep a great schedule for eating, laundry, and cleaning. He also broaches much deeper sections on depression and impulse behaviors of ADDers. This audio book is a captivating and highly educational resourse!! FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Fires of Dis adventure is an excellant adventure that takes the players from Sigil, through Ribcage and on to the City of Dis. Its geared towards parties of 6-9th level and 4-6 players. The adventure is well writen and an excellant piece to add to you collection whether you use the adventure or not.

Superb adventure; no need to be running planescape campaign

Unlike some PLANESCAPE modules, the DM has to be running a campaign there for it to work. But here, it's quite easy to take the party and whisk them off to this world.

The party has been called in to recover a paladin's holy sword from the second plane of Hell, Dis, which is ruled by Lord Dispater (remember him from 1st edition?). But, to get there, the group has to first stop in a merchant city to gather information, sneak through the first plane of Hell to deal with Tiamat's Dragons and then make it down to the second level. From there, they must go in to the City of Dis, potentially rescue some mortals and then enter Lord Dispater's iron palace, which is a maze within mazes.

Best of all, this storyline is set up where you don't have to fight your way every inch. The second plane of hell is used to seeing all types and won't attack you on sight. Further, there are even some creatures on the first plane of hell who might negotiate with you. Regardless, it isn't a hack and slash festival.

There's lot of negotiation (you have to do it as a player to live), some mystery (the players will never figure it out unless you give it away), a chance to experience the context of Hell and some sneaking around. Oh yeah, there's combat, too, but you expect it, right?

Highly recommend.

A well-written Planescape adventure.

Fires of Dis is a very good adventure in the Planescape campaign setting. In it, the player characters must go into Baator and deal with the deceptions of an Arch-fiend. It is very well done and the Arch-fiend is written so as to be exceptionally clever. The plot has a few twists that your players will never see coming. This adventure is heartily recommended.

Dozens of great adventures in one book

This book is a great supplement for any campaign. It contains dozens of minitature scenarios each focused on a particular Forgotten Realms monster. The scenarios are vague enough that they can be usually be fit into any realms location but contain enough plot bits that you should be able to wing it if you have to. Whenever I'm running short on time and need to come up with an adventure quick, this book is indispensible.

An excellent resource

This AD&D (2nd edition) Forgotten Realms book is an excellent resource for any Dungeon Master (DM) running an AD&D campaign, especially one set in the Forgotten Realms. The book contains some 35 (if I counted correctly) mini-adventures, all entirely self-contained, that a DM can slip into an existing campaign, perhaps as a chance encounter while the party is traveling. The mini-adventures range in party difficulty level from 1st level up to 16th level, and range from outdoor to indoor adventures, including any different terrains.

So, if you are a DM, running an Forgotten Realms campaign, then this is an excellent resource for you to get, one that you will find yourself using throughout the years. I highly recommend this book.

Wonderful sourcebook for FR campaigns - time saver!

Here it is, the DM's Bible... over 70 mini-adventures for all levels, all places, and all play styles, arranged by creature type. This book is the saving grace for DM's blessed with those players who love to do their own thing and wander off into the wilderness of the Forgotten Realms. So, when the encounter dice read "Bhaergala," and you say, "Uhhh..." here's the ideal way to handle it! The adventures are all well-written, original, and intense. One of TSR's finest, highest recommendation.

This book will make you laugh out loud if you truly know someone with ADHD. The truth is relayed with a sense of humor and anyone who has to deal with ADHD daily, needs a little humor! One of the most interesting/learning subjects covered was "How learning can be enhanced with the senses stimulated". I actually thought the author knew my son! I shared this book with family memebers. I want to send it to my son's teacher - but I do not have my nerve up yet! I hope the teacher has a sense of humor and truly knows my child, because this book is about him and thousands who suffer with ADHD!

Outrageously funny and informative!

GREAT DAYS gives inspriation and humor through personal stories and wisdom from its author and from quotes of well-known and ordinary people. Each reading begins with a quote, followed by a story or bit of wisdom to elaborate the point....nothing scholarly or deep--just good pracitcal "boosts" for the mind and the soul. The author draws upon her years of experience as a public school teacher, public speaker, wife, mother, daughter, and friend to make this book very readable and appealing. GREAT DAYS is a part of our high school's collection in the library, and it ranks as a favorite among our students and faculty.

I grew up with a copy of "If You're Afraid of the Dark, Remember the Night Rainbow" on my bookshelf, and love it. I came to appreciate it in different ways as I got older, and have given it as gifts on many occasions. This morning, I failed a major exam, and was in my local bookstore doing Christmas shopping as a grief-management attempt. There, I picked up this book, and read through it. It made me cry, but it was exactly what I needed. In the last three hours, I have read this book over and over again.

"If your world has come undone... fasten it securely to the horizon."
"If you're at the end of your rope... untie the knot in your heart."
"If you become lost... make wherever you are look like home."

I would recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with major life changes as an inspirational book, as well as to parents who wish to give their children a book which they can appreciate now, grow into later, and cherish forever.

A terrific sequel

I absolutely loved and still treasure "If You're Afraid of the Dark, Remember the Night Rainbow," so when I saw this one I had to add it to the collection. Its terrific too - really like a continuation of the first book which is neat - it has the same type of drawings and phrases that on the surface seem so simple but in fact are such wonderful truths/messages. I gave this to my cousin along with the first book as she goes on her journey to college....."if one day you must leave home...draw stars on the bottom of your shoes to light your way back." Just such a wonderful book. Hard to describe the depth in the simplicity.

"Instant Feng Shui, Just Add Wind and Water" simplifies a sometimes nebulous artform and explains how our environment reflects our life's experiences. I wish I had bought this book instead of four others which made feng shui seem like too much work!

"Instant Feng Shui" is packed with hundreds of simple suggestions for enhancing one's life. It's well organized and written with down-to-earth practical advice on all the "hot" topics: money, relationships, career, health, family. For example, is your career flowing nicely or is it stalled? "Instant Feng Shui" offers lots of fun ways to enhance your environment for more harmony, abundance and wellbeing.

Miller and Kay tell you how to put the "spotlight" on the "abundance" area of your home. Get your career "flowing". "Heat up" your relationship corner with warm colors or earth elements. Simple and practical. Each chapter has wonderful affirmations to support your goals. This book teaches you to empower yourself by taking charge of your environment, whether it's your office, your apartment or your entire home. "Instant Feng Shui" is worth its weight in gold.

OK, so you've read Driven to Distraction, and all the other classics you could find on ADD. You understand the problems that ADD poses, and the theories behind it's treatment, but you're still struggling to cope? Help is here! This is the only book I have found that provides what children and ADDults alike are searching so desperately for...REAL STRUCTURE!! :)

I am 33, was diagnosed 4 years ago with ADD/ADHD and even had to leave the workplace because I was such a mess. Like so many people with ADD, medication improved some of my symptoms, but that alone still didn't do it completely. Until I found this book, I was very frustrated by the "try and fail patterns" so inherent in this syndrome! With a little creativity, (and we ADDer's have a lot!) I found it quite easy to tailor the ideas in this book to fit my adult needs and lifestyle and am finding this book a real answer to prayer!

Regardless of the age of your children, every parent of an ADD child should have this book in their armory. I highly recommend it for ADD college students and homemakers as well, remembering what the lack of structure in those situations did to my grades and stress level!

I simply cannot recommend this book highly enough! It covers some basic medical treatments as well, so if you can only afford one book, this should be it! (I found this book first at the local library and was so thrilled with it that I ordered a copy of my own. I would highly recommend getting your hands on a copy of it ASAP before it goes out of print as the original addition is nearly 10 years old! This text should be a classic!)

If you are an ADD adult, I would also highly recommend the following 2 resources also available through Amazon: 1)"Driven to Distraction" for a basic overview of how ADD affects our lives, and... 2)"The Sidetracked Home Executives" for homemakers whose homes are completely out of control. I guarantee that together, these 3 books will absolutely change your life, provided you put the tools they offer, to good use! (Prayer helps too!) ENJOY! :)

Practical help.
