This book was the first I read when my then two-year-old son was diagnosed with autism in July 2007. I guess I just got lucky and picked this one out at the bookstore. It is the very best place to start as a parent when your child gets an autism diagnosis. It offers both hope and solutions that your child can indeed be healed. My son is now a three year old who is NOT on the autism spectrum any more, he has recovered from autism. DAN! works, and Dr. Bock is as good as it gets.

This is an excellent book, full of hope and practical steps to actually CURE the 4 A's of asthma, autism, allergies, and ADHD. One of the things that immediately pleased me about the book is that Dr. Bock doesn't waste the readers's time with assigning blame, but instead gets right to the point. I think that most people who would pick up this book already know about the correlation between vaccinations and the 4 A's, so we'll take that as a given.
The case studies Dr. Bock uses as examples are moving, but not tear-jerkers, and his narrative of his growth as an epidemiologist and development of his treatments is very interesting. He is very gracious in sharing the credit for the amazing breakthroughs he and other members of the DAN have achieved.
The book is so useful and clearly written that I bought a copy for my kids' pediatrician, my La Leche League library, myself, and 2 for my lending library (I'm a Bradley Method birthing instructor). I've reccomended it to several people whose children suffer from these illnesses. It is such an uplifting book, detailing real successes in treating children, rather than the typical disheartened medical shrug of the shoulders that can offer nothing to cure these children.
Even if you don't know anyone with any of the 4 A's, you'd enjoy reading this book. Even if you're not a parent, you should read it. Even if you're not trained as a scientist, you can understand it. Buy an extra copy and give it to your library or pediatrician. People need to know there's actually hope for autistic, asthmatic, allergic or ADHD kids!

As a pediatric speech-language pathologist, I found this book to be a helpful resource for professionals who work with children with autism and other developmental delays. The author explains biomedical treatments that many parents are interested in pursuing as they look for options and answers for their own children. I will recommend this book to client's parents and other professionals who are searching for additional information.

Wow, this book is amazing. I know that there is much controversy over autism, but as a mother of a child with this type of diagnosis it was wonderful to read a book that takes it from a different perspective. If the treatments used in this book work, then why argue the details. I assumed that this book would be a dry, factual book about the disorders mentioned, but it was captivating. As soon as I read a few pages I was hooked.

Perfect Resource Guide for Parents Considering a Biomedical Approach to a 4A disorder

This book is exactly what I needed. I have a six almost seven year old son who has been in ABA theraphy at a very good school for over three years. Unfortunatly, the ABA theraphy has helped but not nearly to the extent we were hoping it would. Since he is getting older and approaching (if he hasn't already passed) the age where he can no longer be cured (most things I've read said if you can't cure them by five they are who they are.... I hate those books)we figured we would try something we've been hesistant to do for the last three years.... biomedical treatment.

The thought of pumping my kid with up to 20 or 30 different supplements a day is scarry and something I hoped I wouldn't ever have to do but my son is getting bigger and more difficult to handle with each passing day.

We signed up with a company for sound and biomedical but I haven't received the confidience from the person we were going through. It seemed like they were just after our money and pushing all sorts of stuff at us that we weren't ready for. In defense of this I decided I needed to read up a lot more on this biomedical stuff. So I chose this book.

It has been a blessing to me to have picked this book. It has helped me realize that there might be hope for my child... if not a full cure.... at least a chance of some improvements. Improvements I haven't seen with ABA by itself. The first half of this book is explaining the enviornmental factors that "could" be causing this epidemic.

Some might say there is no epidemic but I do beg to differ. When I was a kid growing up in "kid area" the first time I heard about autism was the movie Rainman. Now, I'm raising my kids in a "non kid area - older area with fewer kids" and I have an autistic son, the people behind us have two on the spectrum and the neighbors next to them have a grandchild on the spectrum and another couple down the street who are raising their ADHD grandchild. It's everywhere and I do believe there are environmenal factors at work.

Anyway, this book does an excellent job the first half going through the reasoning of the biomedical approach with wonderful case studies. The second half of this book is a wonderful reference for all the biomedical stuff that you're kids can/will be on.

I also liked the fact that the doctor gave results of each of the therapis he mentioned so you have an idea what you're chances that certain things will actually improve your child. I like the fact that he doesn't guarnatee a cure like so many other people/books do.

Dr. Brock has written a book that I desperatly needed to read. Right now we are pumping my son with all sorts of supplements and we are seeing some results with it. It's early.... we've only been doing it for a month and a half. I know this is going to help him in some way and this book has helped me get over my fears of the biomedical approach and to give us a chance at helping my son.

Thank you Dr. Brock.

This book is extremely helpful for children with ADHD. It gives practical and fast working advice that is right on the money. It is a great place to start when looking for an alternative to drug therapy. I highly recommend this be the first book you read when you are learning about ADHD - it may be the only one you need. Thank you to Dr. Bob for all your research and clinical expertise that went into writing this book and for all the children you have saved!

When I first saw this book I thought... "18 days? Yeah, right." But I thought I didn't have anything to lose but a few dollars so I got it. We had tried all kinds of diets, vitamins, meds. Things would get better but not be entirely "back to normal".

I read through Dr. Bob's book, took notes, implemented some of the thoughts... I read the entry of one of the readers below that talked about the parasites and wondered if perhaps that was it for us too.

We had an appointment and saw a doctor. Parasites it was. Five days on a course of black walnut tincture and my daughter was a new child. She lost her diagnosis of ADHD the next doctor appointment we had. The teachers could not believe the difference. We are still in awe.

Thank you Dr. Bob. Without you and your book, my daughter would still be on Concerta. And the health of our family would never have been improved from your other recommendations.

For this and so much more, Dr. Bob:
THANK YOU !!!

PS We also HIGHLY recommend the daily devotional Dr. Bob has written. I don't have a friend who hasn't bought it after hearing some of the topics discussed in it - turning grey hair back, the hazards of peanut butter, better sleep, back pain solutions, bringing liver enzymes back to normal, migraines, and the list goes on and on with advice we had never ever heard before and my friends and I read A LOT of health books !!!

Fantastic!

At first when I tried his suggested program I didn't think anything was different/changing so I stopped the supplements (about two weeks into it at least.) Boy could I tell a difference then! Going the natural route prevented from having to see a professional and going on Ritalin or whatever else they medicate with now. I don't use the program full time anymore but when I feel my attention waxing and feel spacey I start up the vitamin B and whammo my head comes back and I can focus again. I thought this book fantastic and recommend it to anyone. He describes what happens in the body and why the deficiency causes ADHD/ADD issues. Even if you don't have the syndrome the information regarding health and how the body benefits from various vitamins is informative.

Dr. Bob does a good job of writing..but misses a few points.

Dr. Bob in his book is another one of those writers about ADHD who believes (sincerely) that supplements, food, good parenting, and so on is the correct answer for treatment of all types of ADHD/ADD. While certainly, the above would help almost any type of disorder, he never bothers to mention at ANY time when his idea did not work, (ie the vitamins failed to solve the child's problems)--so am I believe it is 100% successful?!! Amazing. My question for Dr. Bob is if pharmaceuticals do not work, then why can I name so many success stories from people who DO USE them. Oh, by the way, they do not work all the time. He is a convincing, good writer, he is just totally wrong. Also, he forgets that we now are seeing adults in their 40s still having the symptoms of ADD, who by the way had them first diagnosed in the 1-3rd grades. I would recommend his book, because it is well written and organized. And, all children do NOT need to take medications to modify their behavior. I do think our society at time has gone overboard with that notion. But his book is not the cure all with his omega oils and patented products he so often wants you to use. He has some very good ideas, and I took this into account. He says sugar impairs you immune system, which is abosolutely false, and has some other non sense he tries to pass on with questionable science to back it up. To me it appears as another one of those who believes you should avoid ALL medications at ALL costs no matter what. Also, how many cases a day does he "treat" for ADHD, and how does he deal with adults who have had it for so long. Does he, while flexing soft tissue as a chiropractor, take time out to express his feeling while giving a massage? ADHD/ADD is a long complex condition-- that foods and vitamins cannot "fix" so easily as this half life of 18 days he speaks about. It often involves moral and personal issues at home, that by avoiding sugar is just not going to cover. guyairey

My 3 year old son had been out of control for a long time. He had many symptoms of ODD. He had a short fuse and got angry easily. He always whined and wouldn't sleep through the night. Both my husband and I were at a breaking point, but knew we did NOT want to go the medication route. I always thought our family ate pretty healthy; we would limited our kids sugar/snack intake and we weren't a milk drinking family so I didn't think that my son's 'attitude' symptoms were food/mineral deficiant related. Boy, were we wrong!
While reading Dr. Bob's book I compared my son's 'symptoms' to those in the book. Dr. Bob's book has been a lifesaver! We noticed a difference in only 5 days!
We started w/ the nigtly salmon oil, added flax, changed to soy and rice milk and we are beginning to add vitamins and whole food minerals. We even started the program for all 3 my children.
This book has added a bright future for our children and has given my husband and I the peace in knowing we are actually getting to the root of the problam instead of just medicating the problem. Thanks Dr. Bob.

The Nancy Ratey Story

Nancy Ratey is inspirational and downright practical. It's hard to believe that she has ADHD, but she certainly does. She has a remarkable spirit, as well, to have survived and thrived under her father's rather organized and disciplined eye. Instead of wilting under criticism and a tough standard, she took the advice part of his lectures and tried to always apply it to her actions. Her resilience is remarkable, not unlike the Olmypian swimmer Michael Phelps, who said a little bit of criticism or negative talk on the part of others was something he always managed to turn into the drive to succeed.

Nancy Ratey shares a little of her own life history in this book. I would actually like to learn more. How did she accomplish all, what I call the "heavy mental" work required to graduate from Harvard and also help this institution learn about coaching and the needs of ADHD and LD students?

In her next book, I want her to share her story... Please Nancy? ;-)

As a 46 year old adult, I have joked and been joked about most of my life about being ADHD, yet never took the time to be diagnosed. (While I was growing up ADHD was not understood, therefore never considered). I am a business owner, mother and lead a very busy life. I decided to finally to read a book on ADHD and found this one by Nancy Ratey was the one I chose and was able to download it to my Kindle immediately.

I was shocked, relieved, upset and happy all at the same time to look at the list of symptoms to find that I felt I was reading my autobiography. As I was able to read through, I kept thinking the symptom on each title would not fit me....but when reading the descriptions, they did. I have already implemented many of the suggestions made in the book to deal with the challenges I have faced on my life- and they are working for me! It is such a relief to be able to stop beating myself up for what I have been trying to fix by sheer will, constantly frustrated and angry at myself at my failure to do so..to finally see solutions that work. And I loved how she said over and over again. YOU are YOU...not your ADHD. I know I am a good person and could never understand why my actions and words so often were not congruent with who I thought I was. Now it all makes so much sense. I can't thank Nancy enough for taking the time to write this book, assisting people like me, to be more patient with myself as I find strategies and ways to implement them in order to find forgiveness and understanding for myself and from others.

Nancy Ratey's book, The Disorganized Mind, is filled with insight, science, strategies, possibilities and compassion. It, fortunately, works as a "read it cover to cover" or a "pick it up anytime, anywhere" book.

Nancy understands the dichotomies with ADD, for example, the concept that people with ADD both need and also rail against structure.

She also gets that each of person is unique, and provides a variety for for each person to have choices. I take margin notes or use a highlighter whenever I read through her book in order to identify what is meaningful in terms of understanding and to remember a specific approach.

I did wonder if an accompanying workbook might help someone clarify and actualize some of her concepts. Perhaps that is yet to come.

I also wished I could have Nancy on speeddial. Happily, Nancy's kind voice in the book comes through clearly, and I can open the book at any time as a way of "calling her up!"

Bravo, Nancy, thank you, and "talk" with you soon!

She does not give you a lot of technical/medical jargon. She writes so that parents can understand what they read. She interviews teens with ADHD and gets their input in her books. I recommend her books to parents all the time.

This is another excellent book by Chris Ziegler Dendy. The author presents practical information that will help parents in their day to day struggle to deal with the changing world of an adolescent with ADHD. She clearly has dealt with some of these stiuations herself, so she brings humorous and compassionate anecdotes to illustrate the factual material. I would highly recommend this and her other books on the practical aspects of dealing with adolescents with ADHD

This book was so helpful to me! My 13-year-old son was just diagnosed with ADD and it was a God send. It has so many great suggestions, stories and advice. I stayed up all night reading it! It was like an autobiogrpahy of my son for the past few years. He was especially relieved to figure out what was wrong and read the other kid's experiences.
It was also helpful for me on how to advise my son's teachers of special care that he needs. The appendix for teachers in the back is an excellent tool to give to teachers so they can develop a good basic understanding of the condition.
The book doesn't have much on the medication Adderal which was what our doctor recommended. The information on accompanying sleep disturbances was excellent - our doctor didn't even know about it.

I like the direct "how to" advice in this book. My husband and I have promised one another we will not medicate our daughter and this book has given us more faith that we can keep that committment. This book has given us ideas that are simple to use and practical. Our daughter has a 504 but after reading Dr. Ashley's book we requested another IEP meeting and revised her entire plan based upon the ideas in this book. She is doing much better in school now and homework is not the torture we all used to suffer. The 504 ideas in the back of the book are worth it alone. our school is now using dr. ashley's checklist to help design IEP and 504s for all their add and adhd kids.

I just bought this book with the intentions of reading it. I came to this site to see what other people think about the book. So far I have seen really good reviews on it. But what bothers me are those parents who stress that THEY WILL NOT medicate their child. As a mother I never ever wanted to take that route. I read alot of information to help him without medication. What foods he can eat and other helpful ways to help him without medicine, that was very difficult. Finally after he was almost kicked out of Preschool I took him to our school district and they evaluated him having ADHD. With their diagnosis they allowed him to attend preschool at no cost to me, to make him understand school rules. I also took him to our pediatrician, crying with the news of what they told me, I knew that medication was the only way to help him. Upset and depressed we went home. I started 2weeks before kindergarden and I have notice what a good kid he had become. Since then he has been more focus and attentive in class. He gets his moments when he distracts class but other than that he is doing good. He is very very smart, from what the teachers are telling me.

Plenty has been written about ADHD in children and in adults. All the focus has been on the person with the disorder. What hasn't been effectively addressed is how it affects loved ones of people with ADHD. Nor has there been much hope or help for non-ADHD partners until now.

Reading this book was like a look back into my former marriage. My ex-husband has had ADHD his entire life. During our 12 years together, we - and our children - suffered so many of the situations Ms. Pera describes in her book.

The first part of the book sets up what it's like to ride the ADHD Roller Coaster. Just reading the stories from the support group members caused my adrenaline to surge, like it used to regularly. Believe me, the partners of folks with this brain disorder tell their stories well. The hyper-vigilance, walking on eggshells, watching every penny - it's such a hard way to live.

The surveys the author used are also very revealing. You get a pretty good picture of the challenges faced by partners of folks with ADHD and how the disorder colors every facet of life - eating, sleeping, parenting, sex, finances - and the rest of the world can't understand. You feel positively bereft and, at best, nobody else understands. At worst - and this is standard operating procedure - any problems are entirely your fault.

In case you think I'm dissing folks with this disorder, you need to know how attractive, intelligent, creative, funny and talented they are. However, one does get sucked in by their hyper-focus on the prospective partner and the budding relationship. Then suddenly after the intended is "caught," that "knight-in-shining-armor" disappears and left in his (or her) place is somebody who has no concept of how to relate anymore because they've now moved on to the next person or project that catches their attention and they hyper-focus on that to the exclusion of everything else in their lives.

I spent years in therapy, both with and without the ex, and read many books on the subject to no avail. The problem was that none of the therapists or books took the next step into the challenges faced by partners and to offer effective coping strategies. Solutions were trite and useless. Communication tips for couples where one partner can't focus long enough to say good morning are no help whatsoever.

This book, "Is It You, Me, or Adult A.D.D?" frames the problems differently than any other I've read and gives solid, multi-pronged, science-based solutions. It explains, in layman's terms, how neurotransmitters in the brain work and how medication can make a huge difference by physically getting those messages across those synapses. As the author explains, medication can be to the ADHD brain what eyeglasses are to the myopic eye. There's no more shame in appropriately using medication than the appropriate use of eyeglasses.

There is no one size fits all solution and Ms. Pera makes an in-depth exploration of other therapies that support and supplement medication for those who find that to be a good option.

The best part of the book, however, is the advice and resources for finding a therapist who truly understands the disorder and its effects on a relationship. We spent thousands of dollars on therapists who seemed to know less about the disorder than we did. There was no guidance for people in choosing somebody to help back then.

I particularly appreciate the coping and self-care strategies offered. If these had been available to me ten years ago, I might be in better health today.

Though there's no way I could go back to my ex - too much hurtful water under that bridge - I wonder what could have been if we'd had a resource like this book at the beginning.

. . . I firmly believe that Gina Pera's book will be immensely helpful to people who live with someone with AD/HD. Be it how to deal with denial, identify symptoms, or devise coping strategies for relationships in trouble, this book offers wise counsel and an abundance of practical strategies from couples who live with an invisible "third partner"--Attention Deficit Disorder.

I speak as someone in such a relationship. On page after page, I read my own story in the words of others, continually whacking my forehead in recognition as I recalled yesterday's, last week's, last year's loss of marital equilibrium riding the wild AD/HD roller coaster with my long-suffering partner.

I know that I'll be turning to Ms. Pera's book again and again for its exhaustive lists of resources and references alone. But the most important, most valuable single thing it offers to the adult who has AD/HD is validation--the reassurance that they are not lazy, crazy, or stupid. This book shows that the condition is serious but needn't be crippling to a relationship, and that effective coping strategies exist for couples who are willing to seek them.

The "Our Bodies, Ourselves" for Adults w/ADD

I recalled the shock of recognition and thrill of a first encounter with the unadulterated truth that I had when I read "Our Bodies, Ourselves" as a thirteen year old girl, as I read "Is it You, Me or Adult ADD? by Gina Pera.

As a 43 year old women with ADD who was married to a man with untreated ADD, the book rang so true and touched upon so many of our struggles that it was, at times, disorienting to read them detailed in the pages of a book written by an author who did not know my story. Often, I could only read a few pages before needing to take a break and let the enormity of the suffering and needless pain that ADHD causes in adult relationships to sink in.

For too many of us, the real tragedy comes from having seen expert couple therapists for years desperately trying to make our relationships work, while the good will, intimacy and benefit of the doubt was drained out of the marriage as each new round of therapy failed, all the while, never being offered the information provided in this book that could have put us on the path to understanding.

Gina Pera lays out the necessary truth about the impact of adult ADD on relationships and provides a framework to view the issues not as insurmountable, but rather as typical for our population and, in fact, manageable with the right treatment for ADD.

I urge all couples with children who have AD/HD to read this book. Because research tells us that this disorder is genetic, you and your partner may be affected by AD/HD without knowing it and your relationship may be needlessly imperiled. You may save your marriage by discovering how ADD plays itself out in relationships and learning how to address those issues in your own home.

This book provides clear descriptions of the classic dynamics that often underlie the interactions of adults with AD/HD and concrete strategies to preserve the respect and love that you have for your partner while working to make the relationship fulfilling for both of you.

I am in awe of Gina Pera's writing and her ability to harness what looks and sometimes felt like unrelated, distressing events into a cogent, comprehensive portrait that depicts in a devastatingly accurate fashion what life and love feels like being married to an adult with ADHD.

Thanks to this book, we, adults with ADD, can understand the emotional consequences of our behavior, accept responsibility for it and work to empathize with and advocate for our children, spouses and, most importantly, ourselves with a clear mind and full heart.

As an adult diagnosed with adhd a year ago, I've been doing a lot of reading and searching to learn more about it. Out of a huge stack of books I've read, only a handful give genuine insight into the mind of an adder. Most of what I've found is either too clinical to keep my attention, or too trite to be taken seriously.

Well ... thank God! Bryan is neither a psychiatrist, nor a professional copywriter. He's just some dude with adhd.

His is an amazing, yet disturbing story. What makes it amazing is how similar his story is to mine. At times I felt I was reading a story about myself, just with different scenery. What makes it so disturbing ... well ... is how similar his story is to mine.

The most helpful thing the diagnosis has done for me, is provide a new window from which I can review my past. Some of the mistakes I've agonized over for so long, were nothing but the symptoms of adhd. Communication issues, scheduling issues, work issues ... the list goes on and on ...

Reading about Bryan going through the same things in life I have, has helped me realize I'm not alone. There ARE actually people out there who DO know what I'm talking about!

I can't possibly recommend this book more. Put it at the very top of your list! Buy it now! It's that important.

Just one more thing ... after I was done reading the book, and took a few days to absorb it all, something hit me ... it's why I'm here recommending the book to you right now, and it's gonna hit you the same way too ...

I can't help but feel that I know Bryan, like he's a personal friend of mine.

That's the style of book he wrote, it's that personal. And that should tell you just how genuine "One Boy's Struggle" truly is.

Thanks Bryan!

Are you still reading this? Stop. Go buy the book! :-)

This book should be mandatory reading for anyone entering the field of teaching or who is already teaching, counselors, resource teachers, juvenile workers. ADD is often undiagnosed (unlike ADHD where hyper is apparent) and the child struggles and never knows why. I wonder how many sit in prison today wondering why they never fit in with society or runaways who could never conform to their families rules. I am recommending this book to everyone I know so hopefully they could recognize ADD in a child (or adult) and make a positive difference in their life.

I knew relativly nothing about ADD and how it can affect your life and all those involved. This is a wonderfuly written story of a young struggling boy who knew that he was not bad, but had to wait for years to find out the truth of whý his childhood had been the way it was.
'One Boy's Struggle' is a must read for anyone, not just for someone wanting to find out more information regarding ADHD. This is a poignant story that moved and deeply touched me and made me care for this young man. Thank you, Bryan for the wonderful story that is yours, and that you share you struggle with us.

Truly a Real Life View of Living in the Adder World

I am truly grateful for Bryan writing this book and for me to have found it. For many years I lived with undiagnosed ADD, never understanding why, but always knowing that I was different, and did things differently than other people all my life.

When I was finally diagnosed with ADD it was a tremendous relief to know there really was a reason. I had learned the basics through talking to professionals as well as reading the various books available on the subject. This book is very different from all the basic texts that are available. You can only learn so much at school from reading textbooks. It is not until you finish school and go out into the real world when you realized how it all applies.

Bryan's book is the real world. The ADDer World so to speak. The other books show you the cause but Bryan's shows you the effect.

I highly recommend this book to be read by all people living with ADD/ADHD. It will help you understand the impact that this disorder has actually had on you through your life. I really had no clue myself before reading this book. It is also really nice to know that we are not alone with our struggles. If you did not have it before, you will finish this book realizing that there is definitely hope for an incredibly productive enjoyable future for you.

Even more so however, I recommend this to parents and teachers dealing with children with ADD/ADHD. No one can ever truly understand what it is like to go through life having ADD/ADHD unless they have it themselves. This book shows you the truth dead on, and most likely will be the closest you will ever get to really understand what your kids are dealing with on a daily basis, in both their minds, as well in the world around them.

I also highly recommend checking out Bryan's website: ADDerWorld.com. It is a safe harbor to connect with, and understand others dealing with ADD/ADHD. From my personal experience I can pretty much guarantee that he will personally answer any question you may have if you contact him.

Not a fabulously well written book, but it provides invaluable insight into the heart and mind of a child/young man suffering from ADD. If I were president for a day I'd make it mandatory reading for all elementary teachers and parents of boys with or without ADD. The author clearly has extensive knowledge of ADD as well as first person experience -- a powerful combination that really helps the reader understand some of the many nuances of ADD. This book opened up very enlightening dialogue between my spouse and I and then my immediate family. We were able to confirm what we have long suspected; that in my family most of us have varying degrees of ADD but as adults have learned to compensate in interesting ways. We are productive and happy adults, but felt validated at the similarities we found with the author. Thank you so much for being so generous with your life experiences!

Dr. Curtis has written an excellent book that can be a great resource for parents and processionals in supporting their efforts with children. Written in a clear, concise, and straightforward manner this book provides resources for working with children who are frustrated and parents who can be frustrate with the child or the world around them that is designed to support them. I have purchased copies for parents I work with and utilize it in a parent support group for children with processing challenges. I also have recommended it to professionals I work with as it fills a void left by too many other books that do not accomplish what Dr. Curtis has.

At what point do you seek professional help when a child is acting, by his parent's standards, weird? "Understanding Your Child's Puzzling Behavior: A Guide for Parents of Children with Behavioral, Social, and Learning Challenges" is a parent's guide to understanding a child's strange behavior and whether they should intervene or it is simply another kind of normal. Suggesting that parents never go for short term solutions, how to look at why the child acts the way they act, and when is the line to seek psychiatric assistance? "Understanding Your Child's Puzzling Behavior: A Guide for Parents of Child with Behavioral, Social, and Learning Challenges" is essential for any concerned parent who doesn't get their child's behavior and for community library parenting collections.

Trying to find your way through the myriad of advice about how to parent your child can be overwhelming on the best of days. The actual child can get lost in all of the ideas/philosophies/beliefs. That truth is amplified if your child has any sort of behavior that seems to be outside of the "norm". Dr. Curtis guides parents in an honest, nonjudgmental way toward the avenues which can best help them and ultimately, most importantly, help the child get the support he/she needs. His assurance that positive progress can be made is a gift. That these are not "problem" children who have something wrong with them... a message those of us with atypical children are confronted with all too often, but that they are children who merit more support, understanding and sensitivity. Dr. Curtis knows that children with puzzling behavior operate within a family, and that the parents, who love these kids more than anything and are trying to help them to the best of their ability, need guidance and support too. His holistic approach is truly a relief to those of us who deal daily with the beauty, challenge, heartbreak and joy of raising these unique little beings.

There are numerous "how to parent" books available, with each having their unique twist to the age old problem of raising children. None however, have placed the responsibility upon parents who ultimately know their child better than anyone! This book is a practicle guide for the parents to identify the problems and how to address them. Their teacher? The parents of troubled children know their child better than anyone could hope to. This book is their practical guide to putting their knowledge to work.

He also explores the role of education and shares many adaptive therapeutic techniques and coaching approaches-tools and strategies for helping ADHD adults live better lives.

Our society largely considers therapists to be the first line of defense when we experience personal challenges. That's great if we have garden-variety "issues." But if we have a neurocognitive condition such as ADHD, the wrong therapy can be worse than no therapy at all. And I'm not exaggerating.

Many frustrating years can be spent in talk therapy trying to discover the deep, dark, "real" reason why a person procrastinates or "sabotages" his or her own goals and plans--never knowing that a medical condition is the reason. (A treatable medical condition.) Many clients are encouraged to pin the genesis of their problems on a dysfunctional childhood, never knowing that ADHD is highly heritable. (In other words, odds are good that at least one of the client's parents was exhibiting problematic ADHD behavioral patterns, too.)

Talk therapy might provide a few epiphanies and strategies for change, albeit most of them short-lived. But for many people with ADHD, therapy with a clinician who fails to recognize ADHD or appreciate its significance is a costly proposition that can actually diminish hopes that patterns can ever change.

For some long-time therapists, all this might be hard to accept, but Dr. Tuckman gently nudges readers into these new paradigms. Partly this is due to his clear and accessible prose style. But it's also due, I think, to his knack for acknowledging situations in which a well-trained therapist might draw certain conclusions--but be perfectly wrong. And he does it tactfully and congenially. Not easy!

After years of being a support-group leader for both adults with ADHD and the partners of adults with ADHD, I'm grateful to welcome Dr. Tuckman's practical addition to my Adult ADHD library. It is thorough, practical, authoritative, and easily understood. Routinely, I recommend clinician guides like this to adults with ADHD (and their loved ones); they simply contain more substantial and helpful information than most consumer books on Adult ADHD.

If you are a non-ADHD-savvy clinician who assumes that you would surely recognize ADHD in a client or that you could simply "intuit" the right treatment path, please reconsider. You really don't want to harm your client, do you? You don't want to postpone, maybe even entirely eliminate, the client's chance for success, do you? No, of course not. You want to help your clients free the obstacles in their path. And that's exactly what this book can help you to do.
